Pure guesswork I'm afraid: but Italy is a footballing country of note, and Cristiano Ronaldo might be Portuguese and based in Spain, but he's a massively charismatic player so he could easily be a factor.

I thought of Cristiano Ronaldo but I don't think him is the reason for the rising of Cristian/Christian in Italy. If yes, the rising form would be Cristiano (which is also the Italian form of the name) and not the foreign C(h)ristian.
