Oisin is my absolute fave. I hope it doesn't become popular here! I hate when I like something fairly original and then it ctaches like wildfire!

I love Oisín - one of my favourites (it was my fave for a while) - I was sad to see it become so popular.

Has Ireland had an invasion of Poles?

Very interesting! I knew that there has been some migration from Poland to Ireland but it still surprised me how many Polish names there are on the list.

Thanks for posting this! It was an interesting read. I was surprised to see Maja in the top 100 in Ireland. Maya doesn't really surprise me, but Maja does.

It surprised me too till I realised that Maja is the Polish spelling...

Cool, thanks!I must say I'm disappointed that the top five are so similar to popular names here in the U.S. This is one of the down-sides of globalization, to me.

Yes - I agree. I did a quiz on Sporcle.com - it was to the top 10 baby names in Northern Ireland, Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. There were regional differences like eg, Morgan and Cameron but I would 60% of the names were the same or similar - Daniel, Adam, etc.

I am also surprised by all the polish names! I am also surprised by Maja. O thought Maya would be more popular than Maja (which is #2 in Sweden right now) and that there is quite a few dated names - Bobby, Ross, Hugh, Jennifer, Shannon, Brian, Scott, Jason etcThanks for sharing!

Maja being more popular than Maya surprised me too. Shannon was never popular here in the 70s and 80s - it has only become popular recently along with Erin and Katelyn recently via TV from the US I would guess.Brian never really went out of fashion here, same with Ross.Jennifer and Jason puzzle me too - they are such 70s & 80s names here.Hugh is part of the "old is good again" thing I think.

Thanks for sharing! That was interesting, and I was especially surprised by Jakub, Filip, Kacper, Patryk, and Szymon, and Tara, Zuzanna, and Oliwia... so many Polish names! I didn't know there were so many Polish people in Ireland. And Tara just surprised me because in the US it's quite dated.

I think Tara must be making a come-back - it's quite dated here as well. It was popular in the 70s. There are a lot of Poles in Ireland(not as many as during the boom years but still a lot - I think they are the biggest group of non-nationals). A fair amount of Russians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians as well but a lot of Poles. It's common to see Polish goods in supermarkets in even small towns and also Polish shops are all over the place. I think it's only in the last year or two that Polish names started showing up in the top 100 baby names.
