Kellan grew up in Hawaii. His parents, who divorced when he was 6, had met there and moved there as soon as they could. His father was a partner in a law firm in Hawaii and his mother was a stay-at-home-mom, but when they divorced, Kellan's father left them with nothing and his mom was forced to take up a maid job in a resort. Kellan has been surfing his whole life and became a surfing instructor at the age of 16. That's when he met Alice.
Alice was a cheerleader from Virginia. Her father was highly involved in politics and her mother was a partner in a law firm. Both her parents always worked long hours, and even though they had planned her future (to go to Brown like they did), Alice always had different plans. Her senior year, she finally convinced her parents to let her go on a senior trip. Her and her friends headed to Hawaii that summer...
While in Hawaii, Alice and her friends wanted to learn how to surf. Sure enough, their instructor was Kellan. He didn't look like a local, and they invited him to go out with them that night. Although that was against the rules, Kellan was going to "conveniently" show up at the same place they were with some friends. Kellan and Alice hit it off right away. At first, it was very platonic, Alice had a long-term boyfriend back home. When Alice left, she promised Kellan she would stay in touch.
That summer, Alice thought about Kellan often. Although her parents were helping her get ready for Brown in the fall, Alice's heart wasn't in it. So she took the money she had saved and bought herself a ticket for Hawaii. Lying to her parents about packing for school, she was secretly planning to runaway.
It had taken Alice, 3 weeks before contacting Kellan, but he was thinking about her often. There was something about her energy that Kellan loved. When she told him she was coming to Hawaii again, he got very excited. He even asked his mother if she could stay with them.
The day before Alice was set to leave for Brown, she told her parents the truth. The empty threats didn't scare Alice and she left for Hawaii that afternoon. In Hawaii, Alice stayed with Kellan. She had planned to find her own place but Alice was single now and her feelings for Kellan developed very quickly. Six months later, they were married. :)
