You have been married 1 year.
Your name: Kara Noelle (23 at beginning)
Hair: Dark Brown, Wavy
Eyes: Blue
Job: Doctor
SO's Name: Andrew Sebastian “Andy” (22 at beginning)
Hair: Brown, Straight
Eyes: Gray
Job: Chef
We live in a house in Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
We drive a red hybrid.
Year One
Birth: One year after our marriage, Andy and I welcomed fraternal twin girls! Elizabeth Melody and Lily Cassandra were born on a beautiful spring day. I didn’t have to have a C-section, and both girls were born healthy and screaming. Elizabeth has wavy black hair which we think will lighten to be my color and my blue eyes. Lily has curly brown hair that is already my color, and she also has blue eyes, though hers have flecks of gray probably inherited from her father. We couldn’t be happier!
Year Two
Pet: Andy and I both love animals, and we already have a dog named Penny, but we decided to add a cat to the mix. We named him Momo, Japanese for peach, because of his strange peachy-orange color. He fits in well, though he did irritate Penny at first!
Year Three
Birth: About a year and a half after the twins were born, Andy and I found out we were going to have another baby! This time it was a boy, born in early winter, who we named Joseph Adam. Joseph honors Andy’s mother Josephine, who died when he was a baby. Joseph’s birth was another uneventful one; it progressed normally and much more quickly than Elizabeth and Lily’s did, and he was perfectly healthy and beautiful. He has my dark brown hair, though it is straight like Andy’s, and he has Andy’s grey eyes.
Year Four
Family Vacation: Andy and I managed to get our two-week vacations together this summer, so we took the kids to Florida. The beach was no special attraction for them since we live on an island, but they loved Disneyworld and tubing down the Suwannee River!
Year Five
Adoption: Andy, who was raised in foster care, had always wanted to help children in the same situation, and I agreed. Andy and I talked long and hard about it, and we decided to adopt a child. We adopted a three-year-old boy from Hungary named GÁBRIEL Tibor. His father took off right after he was born, and his mother died in a car accident right before his third birthday. Andy felt an immediate connection with his story when we heard it, as it is so similar to his own. The whole family, kids included, traveled to Hungary to get him. The kids were excited at the thought of a new brother, and Andy and I couldn’t wait to meet our son. It took less than a day for us to fall completely in love with him. Gabe has curly light brown hair and brown eyes, and though he didn’t speak very much English at first he now speaks it fluently. It seems fate that we added this little boy to our family.
Year Six
Overseas: I was chosen over all the other residents in my hospital to go to London with the Dean of Medicine for a week-long medical conference. Though I missed my husband and my children, it was a great experience and I learned a lot.
Year Seven
Birth: Andy and I welcomed child number five, a girl we named Felicia Heather on a stormy fall day. She has my dark brown hair, though it is curlier than mine, and my blue eyes. She was born six weeks premature. She was on the small side, only just over five pounds, but after only a week she was allowed to go home. Her lungs and liver were developed enough, she could breastfeed, and she was in good overall health, especially for a premie. We named her Felicia, which means lucky, because we were lucky she was so healthy. Heather is after Heather Mitts the soccer player.
Year Eight
Family Affair: my brother Sean and his wife Suzy were in a car accident recently. A driver lost control of his car in a storm and hit them. Suzy was okay, only a little bumped and bruised, but Sean had a broken leg and arm on the side he was hit on. We are just thankful they are all right and that their three kids, Molly, Isabel, and Christopher, weren’t in the car.
Year Nine
Move: With our family so large now, Andy and I decided we needed to move into a larger house. Seven people in a four-bedroom house was just too much! We found a beautiful rambling one-story house just a short ferry ride away on the mainland, one with six bedrooms, a full-sized attic we turned into a family room, and plenty of yard for five kids, a dog, and a cat to play. Elizabeth, Lily, Gabe, and Joseph weren’t happy about leaving their friends, but they adjusted and even grew to like it once they found out they could still visit them (and how nice having your own room can be!)
Year Ten
Family Affair: Molly, our oldest niece, was recently diagnosed with asthma. It did not come as a surprise—we had suspected it—but it has been hard on her, learning to adjust. But she is learning that she can live a perfectly normal life as long as she listens to her doctor’s orders.
Year Eleven
Adoption: Andy and I decided to adopt another child. This time we adopted a girl, a two-year-old from Costa Rica named Sara Benita. Sara’s mother, a single woman, gave her up for adoption when she was only a few months old because she could not afford to take care of her. She lived in a poor, crowded orphanage for her first years. She was undernourished and in poor health when we traveled to Costa Rica to get her, and we spent two additional weeks there after the adoption was finalized until we thought she was strong enough to travel. Even sickly, however, she was a sweet and loving little girl. She attached to all of us quickly. She didn’t talk much at all and only understood Spanish, but Andy and I both speak Spanish well enough that we were able to talk to her. She flourished with proper nutrition and care, and is now bubbly, happy, and beautiful with straight black hair and deep brown eyes. When people remark on how lucky Sara was to get adopted by us, we correct them that we are the lucky ones.
Year Twelve
Birth: Only six months after we adopted Sara, Andy and I found out we were pregnant again! We had a beautiful little boy, who we named Owen Grady. He has Andy’s straight brown hair and is the only one of our children with his gray eyes. Owen’s birth, thankfully, was normal and uneventful. He seemed eager to get into the outside world and meet us all! He was born on a mellow summer day, and he has been a mellow baby so far. He is completely spoiled by his bevy of older brothers and sisters, but is still sweet.
Year Thirteen
Overseas: Shortly after Owen’s first birthday, Andy, Sean, Suzy, and I all decided to take a large, two-week family vacation overseas. A mutual best friend of all of ours, Tasha, had finally found the man of her dreams, and after two years of dating, the two decided to get married in China. We all went with them (we had to, as we were in the wedding party!) and had a fantastic two weeks exploring the culture, history, and sights of China before the beautiful, lavish wedding Tasha’s wealthy family put on for her.
Year Fourteen
Long-term goal accomplished: Andy and I have both accomplished goals we have had since we were teenagers. Andy, after years of working hard, has finally opened his own restaurant! It’s a vegetarian/vegan-friendly place called The Green Room, where he serves all kinds of dishes from all over the world. Shortly after the well-reviewed grand opening, I was made head of the residency program at my hospital, something I have been working toward for a long time. It’s a dream come true for both of us!
Year Fifteen
Family Affair: After a long illness, Sean’s and my grandmother passed away. At ninety-three, she had lived a very long and full life and, though we were sad, we were also prepared. We both inherited a sum of ten thousand dollars from her (our grandmother made a tidy bundle in the stock market). Andy and I used it to add two bedrooms in the attic of our house (so no one has to share). What was left over we added to the college savings accounts we have for each of the kids. We think that Grams would approve.
