Ezekiel and Mehetabel are farmers in South Africa. They live in a big house and own an orange BMW. They got married just last year.

When their firstborn son arrived, Zeke and Bel wanted his middle name to be Ezekiel but couldn't decide on a first name. They looked up famous people born on the same day (March 30) and decided to name him after Vincent Van Gogh. Vin has wavy brown hair and brown eyes.

When Vin's little brother arrived, Zeke and Bel were a bit better prepared to name him. They also gave him a Biblical middle name (Jacob) and chose Jason for his first name. Jason has fiery red flyaway hair and brown eyes.

Zeke went on an overseas trip to obtain rare purple and blue potatoes! Soon the family will be rolling in dough for sure.

Now that the boys are a little older, Zeke and Bel took them to Johannesburg when they sold the years' crop of blue and purple potatoes. They checked out some sites of historic interest while there, but mostly the kids couldn't wait to get home again--the family is mostly homebodies.

Bel's grandma died, and they have inherited her pet parrot, Catherine. Catherine enjoys repeating such entertaining phrases as "Time to put in my dentures!" and "Gosh, my hemorrhoids are awful today!" The boys love her.

Someone drops off a box of kittens on their doorstep, and the family gains 9 more pets: Owen (white with 2 grey stripes on his head), Tulip (white), Therese (brown mackerel tabby), Forest (brown mackerel tabby), Fiorella (brown mackerel tabby), Sion (white), Serena (white), Eileen (white), and Nina (white). The boys love having them, and so does Bel--and truth be told, Zeke thinks they're enchanting as well. They do catch mice, so they serve a useful purpose. Zeke says that's why he lets them stay.

By the next year, the family has 51 cats, and that is way too many. Zeke gets all 8 females of the first 9 spayed, and gets Owen neutered. The kids find good homes for Tulip's kittens (Telma, Eleanor, Twain, Thorn, Foster, & Finn), Therese's kittens (Silvia, Seth, Eire, Nils, Twyla, Toni, Trudi, & Theodore), Forest's kittens (Torr, Ty, Tex, & Tsarina), Fiorella's kittens (Tate, Tyne, Theta, & Theo), Sion's kittens (Hugh, Brie, Lore, Clive, Dix, Evan, Nate, & Clementine), Serena's kittens (Dorothy, Corinne, Horatio, Noralee, Mortimer, Orve, Oryx, Lorien, & Ornett), and Nina's kittens (Florentine, Fifi, & Vivian). When the opportunity came up to give Forest and Serena each away with one of their kittens, Zeke insisted they do that too. With the cat count at a reasonable 7, Zeke instituted a blanket ban on more pets. They now have Owen, Telma, Therese, Fiorella, Sion, Eileen, & Nina.

Zeke was thrilled that this year brought another son instead of another cat. When the time came for his third child to be born, though, there was a terrible storm and no way to get to the hospital on time. Their son was born at home. Bel decided to call him Pax because she felt so peaceful about giving birth at home (though Zeke found it nervewracking). She doesn't want to go the hospital route ever again!

A distant cousin of Bel's in the US has given birth to a baby girl and plans to release her for adoption. When Bel learns of it, she wants to make the little girl part of her family, though Pax is barely a year old. She and the girl's mother choose the name Olivia Abigail. Ollie has blue eyes and tightly curled blonde hair. She fits seamlessly into her adopted family, and her brothers adore her.

When Ollie is a little over a year old, Zeke, Bel, Vin, Jason, and Pax take her on a trip to see her birth family. (Catherine, Owen, Tulip, Therese, Fiorella, Sion, Eileen, and Nina remain in the care of a friend.) Though Ollie isn't old enough to understand much, her birth mother is grateful for a chance to see her in person again and connect with her adoptive family, most of whom she had never met (only Zeke travelled to bring her home, and she had never met Bel because they lived in different parts of the world).

This year, on the first of December, Zeke and Bel had a beautiful baby girl. Bel has had plenty of time to find a girls' name she loves: Tirzah Vivienne.

Bel's experience with adopting Ollie means that she takes notice of news stories involving adoption. One day she learns of some Chinese triplets who are available for adoption. Because one of the babies has Down's Syndrome and another little girl has a dangerous heart defect, it seems that no one wants to adopt them. But when Bel sees their pictures, she's convinced that Ning Rong, Ning Shu, and Ning Huan belong in their family. Zeke thinks she's crazy, but agrees to look at their pictures--and then agrees to adopt them. The agency they worked with to adopt Ollie helps them, and they are able to take in their three children despite their large family size because the triplets have proven hard to place. For the first time in years the family has more kids than cats!

Pregnancy and four babies nixed big trips recently, but once Tirzah and the triplets were one, Zeke and Bel planned another trip to the US. Vin and Jason, now 12 and 11, are a lot of help with the little ones. At four, Ollie is old enough to remember and appreciate the trip a bit more. Ning Shu's heart condition is still unstable, but she's in no more danger abroad than at home. Life--especially the important business of family and making memories--can't be put on hold. The bigger kids enjoy the trip, though it's hard on their parents. Still, Zeke and Bel are glad to give Jason, Vin, Pax, and Ollie the memories, as well as giving Ollie a connection to her birth family.

Zeke has said for years he likes the name Zillah, and they love their home country of South Africa, so they give their little girl the very unusual name of Zillah Pretoria. Her big brothers love the name, too--they call her Babyzilla and set up block villages, then put her in the middle of them and pretend that the townspeople are running and screaming in terror.

While taking the potatoes to market, Zeke was in an accident this year. It was very scary for everyone, but he survived and has now recovered. Most of the potato crop was still sold, and the family of 11 is in no danger of poverty.
