[Opinions] River, Cosmia, and Emily
These three names have been on my mind lately.River - after watching the latest season of Dr. Who, which features a reoccurring guest character names River Song, my boyfriend has decided that this is the best name ever. I'm pleased with his taste! WDYT about River? For a girl.Cosmia - I kinda love this name but then I kinda think it make be too much. Comes from a Joanna Newsom song. Can anyone think of a nn besides Mia? Cossie maybe... but that seems kinda cutesy...Emily - I can't believe it, but I've fallen in love with Emily. Even though I've always been Miss "It's on the top 100? Away! Away!" But between reading about Emily Dickinson, reading a novel set in the early 1800s featuring a side character named Emily, and another Joanna Newsom song... yeah, I'm liking Emily. Anyone know a way to make it magically less popular? Anyone who wishes it was magically less popular want to commiserate?

I like River. It's one of the very few names I don't have a preferred gender for, actually. I think it works equally well on girls and boys.Cosmia is all right, but for some reason it makes me think of noses! I like Cosima better.Emily is great. I really like it, too. I think I started liking it when I found out my great-grandmother was named Emily, lol. But it's just such a sweet, happy name that I can't help but love it anyway. I do wish it was less popular, because I love it. I could see myself using it as a middle name though.

I love that Joanna Newsom has inspired you! She's my favorite musical artist.1. I'm not that fond of River on a boy, and I strongly dislike it when used as a female name.
2. I appreciate Cosmia because of Ms. Newsom's lovely song of the same name. I suppose Ozzy could work as a nickname...
3. I like Emily, but she ought to be laid to rest for at least twenty years. Nevertheless, I think the following combinations could rejuvenate the name and/or emphasize its old-fashioned patina:Emily Agnes
Emily Annora
Emily Anthea
Emily Aster
Emily Astraea
Emily Astrid
Emily Augusta
Emily Aurora
Emily Beatrice
Emily Beatrix
Emily Bernadette
Emily Cordelia
Emily Corisande
Emily Delphine
Emily Drusilla
Emily Edwina
Emily Ernestine
Emily Estella
Emily Eudora
Emily Eustacia
Emily Fern
Emily Frederica

I like River and Emily okay. I wish Emily wasn't so popular, too (and Emma!)Cosmia I don't really like. For nns, maybe Coco or Mimi?

I am liking River a lot lately - mostly because of River Song. It totally works on a girl IMO more so than on a boy.Cosmia is very appealing - it sounds rather Poeish to me or like a plant. Emily - hmmm - I can remember liking it a lot before the Emily explosion. There was a specific incident that put me off it. It's a fine name with a lot of history but it's need to rest for a while. I like Emilia though.

I love River!!! I'd totally use it.
Cosmia is awesome. It would get mistaken for Cosima though.... I don't think it needs a nn; I just like the sound of Cosmia by itself.
I can see the appeal of Emily, but as I grew up as one of the few Emma's in a sea of Emily's, I'm a little biased against it :P If it wasn't so popular, especially for kids born in my generation, I'd probably like it.

I love the song 'Cosmia' by Joanna Newsom! *sigh* Joanna Newsom is divine.I prefer River for a boy but it is okay for a girl.Cosmia is beautiful and I prefer it to Cosima. How about Mimi as a nn? It is the only one I can think of besides Mia or Cossie.I will commiserate with you over Emily. I've said it on these boards before, it is probably my favourite girls' name of all time. I think it is absolutely beautiful and there are so many great namesakes. Unfortunately it really is just too popular for me to consider although I really should start playing around with it in the mn position more often...

Oops, I read it wrong.I agree, though, that Cosmia is much prettier.I'm going to be trying to use it now. :-D

Glad someone else loves Emily. It hit my list as well not long ago - despite it being the name of my ex's every-so-slightly witchy sister. I love River as well, and again, for similar reasons. And Cosima: This has been on my list for probably 10 yaers, although I never really thing to use it. Wdyt of just plain Cos? Great taste. :-D

I LOVE RIVER (thanks to river phoenix)
Prefer it for a boy but it could work on either. If I have a son I'll name him river!
Emily is FAR too common. Imagine being one of three or so Emilys in a school class... Awful.
And cosmia, I just dislike
