Claude Louis was unwillingly married to Anna Beatriz shortly after he was crowned. The two were not on good terms and rarely saw each other, prompting Claude to take his first mistress, Jeanne. Although the public was aware of her, she was ignored until the death of Anna when John Augustus was five. Desperate to show proper respect to Anna, he gave her name to one of his daughters. Soon, Claude fell in love with Lady Adéle of Bourbon and sired her two children, one of which he named after Magdalene's deceased son, Arthur Louis. During this time, he also had another mistress, Agnes Margaret. When Adéle died, Claude was heartbroken. He ignored the birth of Agnes's daughter, allowing her to name the child alone. Claude died soon after, leaving the throne to his second son, Joachim Alexandre.
