From the Royal House of Iduno in the Kingdom of Labyrinth
Spending an evening in the Royal House of Iduno, one would quite likely find King Dei in his office, tearing pages out of tabloid magazines and feeding them to the fireplace. Even before he'd remarried Queen Xan, the tabloids were constantly publishing stories about his family.
Queen Cosima murdered!… Princess Lullaby's secret twin sister! Why was she hidden! … King Allows Princess to keep Pet Alligator! … Queen Xan's Affair! … Queen Xanthia: "The Twins Aren't Dei's!" … Queen Xan gives birth to daughter; Prince Jocelyn is father!
Some were ridiculous, of course. Stormily had asked for a pet, but she'd requested a snake, not an alligator (and King Dei had told her "perhaps when you're older"), and everyone knew Lullaby had never had a twin. But the stories about Xan… they concerned him.
His father had told him never to let tabloids get to him, before he'd passed. Dei knew if the stories were about him, he'd be much more capable of laughing it off—he was a faithful man, and knew illicit affairs destroyed families. He would never have an affair inside marriage (Jocelyn had been conceived before he was married; before then-Princess Cosima even liked him… the situation there was different). But did Xan believe the same?
She wouldn't really have an affair, would she? And certainly not with Jocelyn, only fourteen? And he'd been only eleven when the twins were conceived. Or a commoner, as some of the tabloids wrote.
He knew, though, that he needed to trust her and they needed to raise the children—eight of them now—to be upstanding citizens.
Perhaps he would simply ban the tabloids if the stories continued.
