It turns out it wasn't the former queen's cousin who was spreading the rumors about Queen Nicky. It was a carefully laid out plan by Zendar, the kingdom to the northwest border, to begin a war between the two kingdoms. For four long years the war dragged on, with countless soldiers and civilians being killed or injured. Refugess arrived in the royal city by the thousands, fleeing the war-torn northern provinces. It is a picture the entire royal family finds heartbeaking.
Finally, the king and his advisors put together a plan they are sure will end the war for good. The king insists on going to the front to see it through, and Wyatt insists on going as well. Alexander is terribly afraid for his son, but also very proud of his bravery. But when Cecelia insists on going too, he puts his foot down. She is his heir (which everyone, especially Wyatt, approves of) and as such she is far too valuable to risk so close to Zendari kidnapppers. Thsi causes a hige fight, but Cecelia eventually relents. She has recently been married, to the love of her life, Count Gideon of Malialkin. They were not to be married for a few months longer, but when the plan began to form and the king knew he must go, they brought the date forward to make sure the king could attend. Alexaner likes Gideon a great deal, and he knows he will keep Cecelia calm while he is away. Nicky is dreadfully afraid, but Alexander assures her everything will be fine. She begs him to make it home for their children. After kissing his wife and his beloved children, King Alexander departs, promising to return.
But it was not to be. King Alexander was wounded during the battle, badly. Wyatt risked his life to get his father to safety, but the wound was too grave. King Alexander died after only a few hours, just long enough to give Wyatt the goodbye letters he had written just in case. The battle was won, and so was the war by the king's brilliant plan, but everyone mourns at the steep price. Wyatt leaves the generals to arrange the Zendari' surrender and terms. He accompanies his father's body home.
He had not even reached the city before rumors started to fly that he would try and take the throne now that his father was dead. The people waited anxiously to see what would happen. When Wyatt first saw Cecelia after returnign home, the two embraced with tears. Then Wyatt knelt at her feet. Cecelia was now queen, and he supported her one-hundred percent.
The entire family was devastated at the loss of their father. For weeks after the lavish state funeral, in which the king was buried next to his beloved Mirabelle, they were inconsolable. Adam, James, Elizabeth, and Tatiana couldn't stop crying that they wanted their father. Rosabel and Susanna locked themselves in their rooms. Nicky snuck off into corners to weep over a husband she hadn't realized she had grown to love. Cecelia had to sometimes stop meetings with the advisors so she could join her stepmother in a cry. Wyatt buried himself in work, guilt and sorrow eating away at him.
But after a month, things had to go back to normal. Cecelia was officially crowned a month after her father's death. Two months after that, she announced her pregnancy. It was a time of joy and of sadness. Everyone was happy, but it was bittersweet without Alexander or Mirabelle there to see their grandchild. When the baby is born, a beautiful little girl with the dark hair, bright blue eyes, and rosy cheeks of her maternal grandmother, everyone instantly knows there is only one name for her. Gideon and Cecelia give her the first name Mirabelle, and the first middle name of Alexandra, to honor the grandparents who would have adored her. Cecelia then adds the name Nicolette, which astounds Nicky but also warms her heart. She has been enjoying her quiet life out of the public eye, just raising her children and stepchildren with no more scorn or rumors. In the last few years, she has become close to all of her stepchildren, even Wyatt, but she never expected to be so honored. Cecelia and Gideon even call her Grandma Nicky to little Mirabelle. The birth od the new princess signals a time of rebirth in the kingdom--with the war over, everyone is finally able to get theri lives back together.
