[Facts] Re: The Meaning of Belinda
"Das grosse Lexikon der Vor- und Familiennamen" which is based on the name database from the German "Duden" company gives another possible (uncertain) origin for the first element: from Germanic badu, meaning fight, battle. This seems to be a rather obscure word as far as given names are concerned; I could not find other names that are suspected to contain this word.I think the probability of the theory of "bella" plus "lind" largely depends on the time when the name was coined. If it is the 17th century, as BtN cites, probably as the earliest confirmed use of the name known today, I see no problem to take an Italian and a Germanic element to build a name. If the name is much older, however, the all-Germanic theory of something like "badu" + "lind" gains probability.
