Arianna was right about the twins. They began to thrive after a few months, but Arianna herself was not so lucky. She found out she was pregnant only a few months after theri birth. The doctors were so worried that they begged her to let them give her a paotion that would "cleanse her womb," but she refused. She would bear this child, she said. But the stresses of the war, the pregnancy with the twins, and the worry about the twins, had weakened her health too much for this pregnancy to be easy on her. In her seventh month, she went into premature labor and delivered a baby girl. She was alive, but only barely, and her skull was partially caved in because the bones had nto formed properly. She lived only hours, just long enough for Thomas and Arianna to name her. They decided on Hope, as they hoped she would go on to a better place. The stress proved to be too much for the empress's fragile health, and she suffered a stroke.
Arianna was left paralyzed on her left side. Her mind was still sharp as ever, but she knew she could no longer lead her empire as she should. Her health was shattered, and at thirty-two she knew she would not live long. So she abdicated in favor of Rose, her eldest daughter, who was crowned Empress Rosalia Arianna, just after her fifteenth birthday. She was still too young to rule without a regent, so Thomas and Arianna acted in that capacity. As was tradition, Rose was married soon after her coronation, to her sweetheart, a young man named Enrique Miguel Bernardo. He was Lethian by blood, but had been born and grown up in one of the colonies far to the south, the son of a noblewoman who oversaw the empire's interests there and gave him native names. He and Rose had met when he was presented at court only a few months before theri engagement, and though they were attracted to one another and liked one another very much, they did not know of they loved one another yet. But he was noble, handsome, intelligent, and kind, and he was considered a good choice for consort. Arianna lived just long enough to see her daughter's engageement ceremony and cornonation, then her weakened body overcame her strong will and she died of another stroke. The entire kingdom was devastated, but no one more so than Thomas, Rose, Lucian, Rachel, Remus, Giulietta, Matilda, and Caderyn. The entire family was heartbroken, and they felt as if their world was tubling around them. But they were strong for one another, and managed to pull together.
Though they were married, Rose and Enrique, now called by the Lethian version of his name, will not consummate that marriage until Rose turns sixteen and the reigns of government are given over to her. For now they still act as sweethearts. Thomas continues to rule in Rose's stead as regent, though she is gradually taking more and more of a role. Though the people are optimistic about The Glorian Rose, they still mourn their beloved Empress Arianna Theodora. Her death led to a new nickname, one that will be written into the histories and used for all songs, stories, and future references to her. From her death onward, she will be known as Arianna the Strong, not only for her strength in battle and strength of character, but for the strength of her love for her family and her people and the strength of her mind even after her body failed her. Her family, though still putting themselves together, take some measure of comfort knowing that this is how she will be remembered.
