Varinia has finally come of age, and Fidelia has stepped down. Both are happy: Varinia is well prepared to rule, and has finally been permitted to consummate her marriage. She has recently given birth to a son. Fidelia, meanwhile, is enjoying a quiet life and has married Klaus, a high-ranking palace servant with whom she has fallen in love.
Aloisia has always been a spiritual child, and has become a High Priestess and renounced all worldly possessions and her claim to the throne. Rainer dreams of joining the navy. It seems to him an exciting life, full of danger and discovery. Hadassah, meanwhile, has smaller dreams: her favorite pastime lately is flirtation, and she has been caught more than once with various palace boys. Fidelia and Varinia constantly lecture her about modesty and restraint, but so far it has done little good.
