From the most noble house of Tayel,
In the mighty kingdom of Kriana.
For the first two years after Gloriana's birth, life was good for the kingdom of Kriana. Harvests were bountiful and trade was flourishing, and thanks to Queen Kat's new public assistance programs, even the very poorest were able to work and eat. Court-patronized scientists, writers, and artists led to a flourishing of Krianan culture. Kat and Arthur sponsered several exploration/trading expeditions, which led to valuable contact and trade agreements with other lands. And Kat's new program of free public schools in every city and village, sponsered by the wealthy and benevolent at court and in the specific towns, led to a flourishing of education never before seen as well as a marked increase in Kat's popularity. The people of Kriana were happy and prosperous.
But it was not to last. Not long after the new year, soon after Mirabelle turned four, a great fire struck in the city of Hymel, an important trading city on the coast. It burned for eight days, killing dozens and leaving over a thousand injured, homeless, or without a livelihood. Kat sent soldiers, physicians, and volunteers to help the people of Hymel as well as opening up places for refugees in all nearby cities. And she sent people to investigate the cause of the fire. Rumors had started before the fire was even out that it had been set intentionally, with people blaming everyone from a local crazy person to agents of an enemy kingdom jealous of Kriana's prosperity. Kat's agents were able to discover the origen of the fire, which was the city's watchtower, but were unable to determine whether it had been set by accident or intent. For now, the official royal position is that it will be seen as a terrible accident until evidence proves otherwise, but there are still mutters.
During this trying time, Kat once again became pregnant. Everyone suspected twins because of her size, and towards the end of her pregnancy the physicians ordered her to take things easy. She still performed her duties as she should, but she spent more time resting and did nto do as much strenuous physical activity. That was difficult with two very active small daughters, but Kat took it in stride. She carried the twins to term and her labor progressed normally, but when the first twin was born--a boy--he did not cry as he should have. And when he did cry, it was a thin, weak sound, not what a healthy baby should have. He weighed only five pounds and didn't seem to have much strength. The second twin, a girl, weighed nearly a pound more and was healthy as Mirabelle and Gloriana had been, but for days the physicians fear for the little prince's life. Kat and Arthur refused to give up on him, and for days the physicians worked almost constantly around him. They advised Kat to nurse him as often as he would eat to get his weight up, which they thought might increase his strength. Kat had both twins constantly in her arms for the first week, for she had the fixed notion in her head that having his twin with him might inspire him to the same strength. For nearly a month the physicians worried, even as he began to gain strength. Btu the little prince steadily improved and never declined. Kat and Arthur have been warned that their son may always be weak in health, but they are simply happy he is alive. The kingdom was too, as the loss of a royal child after the tragedy of the fire would have been a great blow. The twins were named on the day they were born; the girl Kat and Arthur named Seraphina, the name of a famous physician from more than a hundred years in the past whose mere presence was said to calm patients and help them heal. They gave her this name becasue Kat still believes that it was her presence that helped her brother. The boy they named Gabriel, as it means "strong man of God." They made his last middle name Jude, after the patron saint of lost causes. Seraphina's last middle name is Hope, for the hope they have that tragedy is behind them and things will go well again. Their first middle names are both after saints, while their second middle names are of the same origen and have connotations of nobility and strength. Their third middle names are simply names the entire family loved and agreed upon.
