Help[Opinions] Dorcas/Tabitha
I used to dislike Dorcas because I felt it sounded somewhat coarse. Now I love the name, I actually think it's nicer than Tabitha, its Aramaic equivalent. Tabitha probably gets "Tabi" as a nn, can't say I like that. WDYT? Do you prefer Dorcas or Tabitha?

I'm sure it's been said many times, but Dorcas sounds too much like dork - and mucus, come to think of it. Very harsh-sounding.
Now, Tabitha I love! And I think Tabi is a great nickname. Would you like Tabitha if there were other nn options? Bitsy? Beth? Tabs? Tabsy?
On a somewhat related note, I find it interesting now names are changed as they make it into other languages and often to not even resemble each other. Makes me wonder why they even say that it's a related name instead of just letting it be two completely different ones. Other than Dorcas/Tabitha I am thinking of James/Tiago. I'm sure there are many others.

Names that change from 1 language to another
Even James and Jacob are supposedly the same name, but 1's Grk. and 1's Hebr. Seamus is also a form of James.
Ian is a form of John. So is Ivan. I can kind of see the progression on those though. Also Sean and Shane... and Jane.
Moishe is also Moses. At least some resemblance is still there.
Yasmin takes a few steps to Jessamine.
Peter and Pierre and Pedro... Petros. At least they're all Ps.

I kind of like Tabitha, and wouldn't mind seeing it more often. Dorcas, on the other hand, sounds too harsh to me and reminds me of "dorkus." Out of the two, Tabitha would definitely be my pick.

Well, I kind of like Dorcas, I admit. But I posted about it once, a long time ago, and I couldn't disagree with the majority opinion amongst the responses. This was, that because it sounds like the two words, "dork" and "ass", that it is unusable. Well, the second syllable doesn't sound *exactly* like "ass", but close enough.
I love Tabitha and feel that it's grievously underused.

I know two Tabithas. One was in my high school class, and the other is in fifth grade. (Well, starting next week.)

Definitely Tabitha. Dorcas doesn't sound pretty to me at all.
