Help[Opinions] Stanley and Virginia
I was riding in the car with some people a little while back. I was looking at the street signs and two caught my attention. They said "Virginia Street (or avenue or something)" and "Stanley Road (or way or something)." I remember thinking that Stanley and Virginia went really well together. What do you think of them? Would they work now-a-days or would they be better off on characters in a story set a hundred years ago? Do you like any middle names for the two of them?

I'm not really keen on either name, I think of them as old fashioned. However, I do know a Virginia who is about 15 (goes by Ginny) so I do think they can work nowadays - I just wouldn't use them myself. Also, they go well together for brother and sister.

I think they're too old and bland. Ginny is cute for a little girl, though.

Eh, I don't think they go together... Stanley just makes me think of Flat Stanley; I don't like the name though. It just doesn't have a pleasant sound in my accent. Virginia is nice. It could be used now easily, although my first impression of Virginia is in the past, I wouldn't be surprised to meet one nowadays either.

Unfortunately, I doubt children could resist making fun of VIRGINia. Children are cruel.
I've used them in a story set fifty years ago, but I suppose 100 would do.
I'm not very good at combo-making, but I shall endeavor.

Yeah, so would I, even though the only Stanley I've ever known was a young black guy.
Even though I generally like girl's names that start with a V, I've never been able to like Virginia. I'm not sure why. It's the type of name I usually like--long, flowery, ends in an A, and starts with my favorite letter, V. Why don't I like it? I think it's just got an image for me---of a big, clunky girl wielding a hockey stick. Maybe because I knew someone like that, in college, whose name was Virginia? Must be. She was always called Ginny---I don't like that nickname, and maybe that's another reason I don't like Virginia.

Virginia is a long time favorite. I hadn't ever really given much thought to Stanley before, but now that you mention it, it does seem to compliment Virginia so well. I think they would definitely work now-a-days.
