[Opinions] Alexandra or Alix
I have a slight dilemma. As some of you know, I love history and there are a few personalities of which I'm partial that I'd like to name my children after. One of those personalities is Aleksandra Feodorovna, the wife of Nikolai II (however, I'd use the Alexandra spelling), who was born Alix. I'm stumped, though, over which name to use. Do I use the name she was born with (Alix) or the name she took after converting to Russian Orthodoxy?I'd like to use the name as a MN for Irina. Which do you like better: Irina Alexandra or Irina Alix? Also, are there any persons from history (or anywhere else) you like enough to name your child after?_____

Alix is, to me, a trashy, made up (masculine) misspelling, even though it has roots in history. Sorry! I understand that you want to honor her, but I STRONGLY suggest Alexandra, which is gorgeous. Alix clashes with the beauty of Irina. Irina Alexandra is absolutely gorgeous!

I prefer Alexandra with Alix as a nickname. Alexandra seems more feminine to me. Irina Alexandra gmv.

I agree that Alexandra looks more feminine. I'm really like the fact that it's longer than Irina and it ends with an "A"._____

I prefer the formality of Irina Alexandra*************************************************

I think I prefer that, too. Even though I love Alix, I don't think it quite matches the regality of Irina._____

Irina Alexandra looks more rounded more finished if you know what I mean and I prefer this over Irina Alix
Alexandra is one of my top three favorite girls names so I am biased in favorour of it
Alix seems too short too nicknamey for my tastes but then I tend to prefer longer forms over short formsImage hosted by Photobucket.com

I'm inclined to agree that Irina Alexandra looks more polished. It just looks more complete. The more I look at it, the more it seems like the perfect "Irina" combo. :) _____

Yes, Irina Alexandra flows very well where as Alix is cute but doesn't flow. I love history too, my favorite is Queen Victoria, and for a while I had her name on my list. I also love her children's names and have considered using one of those as well. I'm also fascinated by Mary, Queen of Scots and technicaly the name Mary is on my list (Julia Mary) but it's there more to honor relatives than to honor her. But there's another reason to use Mary! :)I also enjoyed learning about Nicholas & Alexandra and their children, especially Anastasia.Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I have a special place in my heart for Queen Victoria, as well. :) Her daughter, Alice, happens to be Aleksandra's mother. Alice wanted to name her daughter after herself, but needed a suitable substitute for the name Alice because it was too difficult to pronounce among the native German-speaking population. "Alix" was as close as she got. Little Alix also recieved the names of all her maternal aunts and she was christened Victoria Alix Helena Louise Beatrice. When Alix was about six or seven, her mother died and she went to live with her grandmother, Victoria and remained there until she married Nikolai. [/history lesson] Sorry, I ramble sometimes. :)Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about Mary, Queen of Scots! I'l have to read up on her. Julia Mary is a fine name, BTW. :) How lucky you are to use it as a name to honour relatives as well as a person from history. The name Mary is a lovely middle name and complements almost any first name.Anastasia is quite a character! She was very much the "énfant terrible", always in some kind of scrape, lol. My favourite Romanov child is the same as my BtN screen name, Maria. I just love looking at pictures of them all. They seemed so happy.

I love history lessons and that was so cool! :)So Maria is your favorite. I remember loving her nickname but at the moment I can't remember what it was! :(I thought it was so cool when I first found out that Victoria and Anastasia were related, but I shouldn't have been surprised, European royals have been inter-marrying since forever! :)Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I think the combo Irina Alexandra works best.I want to name my first son Christian after King Christian IX of Denmark. I'm having trouble thinking of a good middle name though.

How interesting! Christian IX was Nikolai II's grandfather through his daughter, Dagmar (who eventually became Maria Fyodorovna of Russia upon marrying Aleksandr III). I remember nicknaming him "the man who accidently became king" because I don't think he was heir to the throne of Denmark, was he? It's so interesting to work out how all the royal families of Europe are related. Genealogy is so much fun when you ahve time for it. What were Christian's names at birth?_____

I'm not sure, it might've been Christian lol, I can't actually remember lol. I watched a programme on our History Channel which was about King Christian IX and his decendants, I found it very interesting and fell in love with same names because of that programme. I really love royal history atm. King Christian VIII was Christian's wife's Uncle. Christian VIII's son Frederik was named heir but as Christian VIII was sure Frederik wouldn't have an heir, the second in line became Christian IX's wife which passes it onto Christian. (wife didn't give up throne, that's just how it happened). Christian was a distant relative of the royals as he was a decendant of Christian III. I actually just read that on some website just before.

We have a common interest then. I love royal history.I didn't know Christian's ascension to the throne was so complicated! Didn't a war break out when he was named heir? Or maybe I'm thinking of another monarch...Anyways, I think Christian Frederik would be very handsome. I wonder if Frederik and Mary will use Christian AND Frederik for their son. I can't wait to see what they name him!_____

I like the combo Christian Frederik but I want to use Frederik as a first name. Do you think it would be odd for me to use those sort of names? I'm from New Zealand and have English & Scottish history. They probably will, apparently they have the first name followed by three other names. Other possible names for them to use will be Henrik or Henri and some other names lol. Frederik is Frederik André Henrik Christian so they could use André. They might use one of Joachim's names (Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian). They also could use Valdemar. I think there's a very high chance that he'll be named Christian.

I don't think it would be odd at all! Christian is used in a variety of languages and Frederik is close enough to Frederick that I don't think it would be too far fetched for you to use it, especially as a middle name.As for the little Danish prince, I'm placing a bet on the names Christian Joachim Waldemar/Valdemar Henrik._____

Oooo I'll place a bet too (I wonder who will be closest!)although I can't think of a good combo atm lol, I wonder if they have debates about his name....
I'll start with Christian Henri Frederik André, although I'm sure I'll change my mind lol. Or maybe Christian Henri Joachim Frederik, I sort of like this one more right now....I'm too indecisive!!

I'm wondering if they'll use Frederik. It seems customary for the first sons of future monarchs to receive the names of any royal grandfathers, uncles and a famous ancestor, so they might wait and use Frederik on any future male children.I'll be very surprised if Mary and Frederik don't use Christian. I was shocked when Haakon and Mette-Marit didn't use Olav, which a lot of people thought the couple was sure to use. Even if they hadn't used Olav, I thought for sure they'd use another family name. No matter, though, because I love Sverre. It's a perfect match for Ingrid. :)

In Denmark the kings alternate between the names Christian & Frederik so they may not use it as a first name on another son. Both Frederik & Joachim have the name Christian so it is possible that Frederik could be used like that.I love the name Haakon. Are Haakon & Mette-Marit Norwegien royals?
vote up1
Yeah, Haakon is the heir to the Norwegian throne and Mette-Marit is his wife. Their first born was named Ingrid Alexandra and they just had a little boy which they named Sverre Magnus. I love reading about them. I love all the royal houses, but my favourites have to be the Scandanavian royal families. :)_____

I like those royals too, although I don't know too much about them. I love their names, I'm getting sick of all the english names being so popular. There's so many Sarah's and Matthew's in my year at school and I have noticed that in the youngest year at my school (year 7, I've just finished year 12, only one more year left for me!) the new names are Jayden & Jamie. I don't like the english royals that much, (even though my country is in the commonwealth). Their names are too boring lol. We don't here much about royals here which is ashame but if there's anything on TV about any royals I usually watch it.
