In the mighty kingdom of Ontolakis
Lav finally found out about Despina and Selena's plans to assassinate him, their eldest daughter, Emmanouil, Demi and his children with Demi. He knew he couldn't stop it in any way - a divorce or arresting his wife would cause a huge scandal and harm his children's reputations badly. Instead, he decided to cancel Edmonda's engagement with Kato, crown prince of Auca and instead wed her to a gentleman in Helios (the capital of Ontolakis), so if Edmonda had to flee quickly, she could easily hide at here fiancee's house. In this way, Edmonda would have a safe place in the city, even if royal castle falls into Despina's hands.
Hektor Kanellis was the name of the lucky man Edmonda was now engaged to. He was from one of the most powerful noble families in Ontolakis and they had their residence in Helios, not too far from the royal castle. Hektor was known to be the man of all girl's dreams. It was just not that he was rich and from a politically influential family, no, he was handsome, classy and charming too. Along with that, he was also very talented in sports, martial arts, combat skills, poetry, mathematics, horse riding, music, dance and philosophy. At first, Edmonda was disappointed that she wasn’t to marry a crown prince anymore, but after just a few meetings with Hektor, she changed her mind. To her sister, Konstantina, she later whispered that she was totally enchanted by Hektor. Not too hard to understand why. (Konstantina’s name will be Fakiri-Kanellis if she marries Hektor.)
Speaking of Konstantina, she didn’t have a clue about what was happening in the castle, with her mother’s evil plans. Of all her children, Selena talked mostly to Konstantina, and sometimes it was almost like she hinted that Despina might return and that she might kill Lav and that Konstantina should consider flight soon. But Konstantina didn’t quite understand - what was her mother talking about? She couldn’t be involved in these crazy ideas! Konstantina was naïve and always thought the best of people, and consequently she could never suspect her mother for murders.
Just like Konstantina believed in the best of people, she also believed in love at first sight. A couple of months ago, she met a boy at a ball in the royal castle. He asked her to dance with him and they spoke for a couple of minutes, and then he was gone. But it was too late - Konstantina had already fallen in love, even though the only thing she knew about him was his name (Panagiotis). Lately she painted a lot of paintings of roses, and in the corners of these paintings she always wrote “Pan”. Love at first sight, she said.
Ikenna and Callisto turned 11 and Lav sighed as he thought of how fast time flew. Soon he’ll be looking for a husband for Callisto too. She’ve always been allowed to play a lot with the children of the staff in the castle, but lately Lav have been forcing her to go to “tea parties” instead. Tea parties are social events for young noble children, a great opportunity to make friends, according to Emmanouil. Lav agreed with him. Lav was scared that the beautiful Callisto draws attention from a lot of boys … and he feared that some of the boys of the staff might fall in love with her when she’s older. A love affair between a princess and staff boy was scandalous and could not happened, that was why Lav wanted Callisto to spend more time with “youngsters of her kind”. Callisto, on the other hand, hated the tea parties. She said, that the kids there were snobbish and boring. Callisto was very strong-willed too.
Ikenna hadn’t made any further process but was known to be a sweet boy.
Jerónimo and Erasmus were best friends. On the outside they were completely different: Jerónimo was dark-skinned, had curly hair and amber eyes (very exotic in Ontolakis) while Erasmus looked like the average Ontolakian with lighter skin, wavy hair and dark-brown eyes. Despite of their looks, their personalities were very similar; they were lippy, fun-loving, energetic, loyal partners in crime. Nothing could separate them (they even had their own nick-names for each other: Jerry and Erry.)
Iason never joined “Jerry and Erry” when they played. First of all: he wasn’t welcomed. Jerónimo felt threatened by him because he was Lav and Selena’s “real” son, and Erasmus felt threatened by him because he was probably going to get the throne one day. Secondly: he was not really an outdoor kind of kid. He liked to sit in the castle and study a lot better. He spent most of his time reading or playing an instrument quite akin to the guitar. He didn’t like the fights and altercations and intrigues in the castle, he rather just shut out the world by concentrating on studying. Besides, he hoped that if he would just spend a lot of time in castle, his skin would grow lighter and he would start to look like an Ontolakian. He hated to look like a foreigner, mostly because he hated to stand out of the crowd. He was very shy, too.
Artemis was often teased to tears by Jerry and Erry, who loved to fool and scare her. After a while she learned to hide where no one would come looking for her: in Iason’s room. Secretly, she admired him. He was so smart and calm, she thought. Besides, his curly hair was very nice to touch. Iason and Artemis didn’t talk much, but they spent time reading together. But if Selena ever asked Iason if he had been with Artemis he always said no, because he knew that she wouldn’t like to hear that also Iason had found a friend in one of Demi’s children.
Rhea and Kassandra are very young, but could easily look like sisters. Still, they don’t really seem to get along too well.
So why hadn’t Selena and Despina made an attempt to kill Lav yet? Many times Selena had set a date, but got cold feet in last minute. Besides, she couldn’t find any of her old friends in Cordocia - after the revolution, most of them had been executed. She didn’t know where to live if she couldn’t find a place in Cordocia. Despina’s patience was running out. Her son, Tryphon, was now ten years old, almost old enough to be crowned king, Despina thought. Then Despina met a man, Ambrosio. He told her that he was a royalist supporter from Cordocia, with family in Galdemir, a big town in Ontolakis. After the revolution he had decided to flee to Ontolakis, since it wasn’t safe in Cordocia anymore. When Despina asked if he’d like to shelter Selena and her six youngest children if so was necessary, he instantly said yes. Problem solved, according to Despina, but Selena wasn’t sure if she could kill her husband, eldest daughter and the rest of them. The adventure continues …
