[Surname] Greek surname
I have a question regarding my last name of Scordakis. To me it is obviously a name that has come from Crete. My grandfather came from Messinia and my family insists that our heritage is from the Peloponnese. They also state that there are many Scordakis in the Peloponnese. I ask this question because I am interested in joing a Creten society here and the family thought I should be joining one for the Peloponnese. I can't make sense of why the family thinks their ancestry doesn't come from Crete. Any insight would be helpful and also please let me know if I am wrong about this origination.

The -akis ending is a Cretan one. Perhaps there was a migration from Crete to Pelopnnesos. Local histories, Cretan or Peloponnese, might record any that occurred. Otherwise you could try to find out where your surname is best represented, or where the earliest example of the name was recorded.

See the italian surnames Scordari or Scordia and the greek Skordas.
They should come from a greek word meaning "garlic".
OK?
