[Opinions] Fern?
I'm really digging Fern lately. I worry about people thinking its hickish though. What do you think of the name Fern? Would you hate being named Fern? Thanks!

I've never heard of anyone named Fern, but I like it. That said, I'm surprised to see it's supposed to be a girl's name; it sounds very much like a boy's name to me.

I think it's a beautiful name. It sounds both soft and strong. Fern makes me think of tropical gardens, soft rain and the earthy smell of the soil.

It's not a "hickish" name by any means. However, I don't like the fact that, with the name being one syllable, the only vowel sound is a schwa: "fərn."

I think it's a great name - not too flouncy but not ugly either.S xx

I adore the name Fern. I do not think it is hickish at all. It is very hipster-urban to me. I wouldn't mind being called Fern.

Hickish? Nah, Fern has a very polished, sophisticated feel to me! Like the more down-to-earth Edwardian girl, who wanders through gardens and the woods wondering about things. It's (perhaps obviously) a nice green color, but it's more of a sagey green. And it definitely feels brown, too. I like the pair together. I wouldn't hate being named Fern, though I don't think I'd be a good Fern, either. But it was my great-grandmother's middle name!

I like it - not as much as I like Fleur, but it's very pleasant and usable.

I really like it too. It has a sweet and somewhat hippy-ish feel to it, which appeals to me.

Fern is no worse than Poppy or Lily, and they're marvellous plants. The only human ones I've known have been rather unintelligent, but that's not the fault of the name or the namers. If you're hesitant about Fern as a stand-alone name, what about using it as a nn for Fernanda? More possibilities ...

I used to like it a lot. Ferns are so delicate and pretty in a nice plant-ish way, but the word Fern is not very pretty or delicate (especially in my accent), so it creates conflicting images in my mind. And then there's the melodramatic Fern from Charlotte's Web, who I never particularly liked...

I like it but I probably wouldn't really use it. To me it doesn't sound hickish. Maybe hippie.

It's beautiful and underused. I don't find it hickish at all. Would I hate being named Fern? Not at all.

Whenever I imagine a Fern I see a heavyset, middle-aged lady. It's a rather harsh, unpleasant name for me.

Not a fan, but would definitely be a nice alternative to another Lily or Rose

Fern is great! I always loved the sibset Avery & Fern from Charlotte's Web. I knew a Fernanda nn Fern which I thought was neat, if a little excessively hip (then again, maybe it was the over-hipness of the person). I don't think of it as hickish--more as hippieish.

It's my great-grandmother's name, so I like it for that reason, though I do not find it to be especially mellifluous.
