I like it, seems very spunky and butch. I met a surgeon named Dougald once - very similar sounding. I'm not familiar with Father Ted, though I fear the nn Dougie, like Doogie Howser.

I rather like it! I've really started to love the name Douglas, which I began using to honor my step-g-pa, and I can't say I dislike Dougal. I love Scottish names so I can't say I hate this but I can't say I love it either. It's growing on me. A character in a book once was named Marjorie MacDougal so it makes me think of her and her uncle Alexandre MacDougal. :)

My brothers name is Douglas and we sometimes call him Dougal as a nn. He doesn't really like it because there's a toddler tv programm in britain with a talking dog called Dougal... ;-)

Dougal is nice, masculine, Irish/ Scottish name, but the meaning is kinda "blah", if you know what I mean. "Dark Stranger" isn't bad, just a little dull. I like the name, but not the meaning

I think it's cool, but I prefer Dougray. Dougal has a nice sound to it, and sounds like he'd be a good guy. Is there a Dougal in Macbeth? I feel as though there was--or that there ought to have been.

...I've looked it up, and there isn't, but I think if there was, Dougal would be one of the good guys. It's just a really friendly name like that.

In some ways I think it's a funny name and I always remember Dougal off Father Ted when I think of the name and then giggle (hehe) 'cause he was funny and stupid lol. Anyways I like it, and was considering using it, maybe as a middle name as it would honor my late grandfather.
