I received a letter from Thomas last week asking assistance to allow him to join us here. I shall speak to the governer as soon as possible to help facilitate this if you approve of the move. I understand that Thomas at only twenty-one is your youngest child mother, so can imagine it shall be hard for you to say good-bye to him. I do promise to look after him should he join us, you have my word. Perhaps you yourselves should consider the move?

Lovise and Ludovic have been corresponding with Lovise's elder sister Dorothea back in Denmark. Dorothea and her husband, Kasper, along with their three little ones have decided that it would be wise to immigrate themselves. Lovise, who has always been very close with Dorothea, finds that it would be wonderful to bring Dorothea, Kasper, and their three darling children to their new home in Austria. Ludovic, never having met Dorothea, thinks it would be nice to have some of his wife's family living nearby. It would also be nice for the boys, for they would have an aunt, an uncle, and some cousins nearby, for Ludovic's brothers and sisters were all in France. Lovise replied to Dorothea's letter saying that she and Ludovic would be glad to have them stay at their house until she and Kasper could find a home of their own. After they had left for Israel, Shayna and Avraham tried to correspond with their families.
In the early days of the war, the Rosenfelds had fled to Russia, and were looking into moving to the USA and refusing to let their eldest daughter convince them to join her and her husband in the Holy Land.
Nussbaums had stayed in Poland, figuring the war would be a quick one. They were wrong and by the time Eidel decided they had to leave, the family had already lost several members. Among them, Avraham's father Marek Daniel (43), his siblings, Oskar Lev (18), Nikifor Ariel (16), Andżelika Ilana (14), Andrzej Mordechai (11), and Maksym Natan (21, Monika's husband). It was only supposed to be men over the age of 10 getting taken, but Andżelika had been sick, so she had been taken away too. As soon as the police had left with them, Eidel hatched a plan to get herself and the rest of her family to Israel, where she knew her son would help take care of them. The letter had to be smuggled, but once it reached its destination, the Nussbaums would be saved.
Once they received the letter, the Zions used the money enclosed to buy a plot of land and get a builder to start building. The builder, David, was a family friend, so he helped them get funding from an international Jewish organization to build a home for the remaining Nussbaums, who by this point were planing on changing their last name to Zion.
Another family friend organized for a two German families to give them their passports so they could get to Israel. For their voyage, they were to be Catrin (Eidel), Gunter (Jakub), Eleonora (Natalia), Knut (Rafal), and Hanne (Alina) Strand, a family who lost their patriarch to the war and was heading to Greece to see family and Adele (Monika), Janina (Milena), Siegmund (Salomon) Bleier, an older sister/younger sibling trio that were being sent to a navy yard to work the ships. Once they got to their destinations they'd board ships and go to Israel.

Even if they miss their families, Émile and Clara are happy in Sapporo. Even in they had stayed in their countries of origin, at least one of them would've had to move away from their family, since their from different countries.
Émile is teaching piano at a private school and is making enough money to pay for their small flat. Clara has had different jobs; sometimes as maid, janitor or babysitter. She was quite shocked to find out that she was pregnant. It's a bit soon for both her and Émile. To have a baby is expensive and they don't know if they can afford it.
In the meantime, both Émile and Clara have been mailing with all their friends and relatives back home. Clara's younger sister in Umeå, Northern Sweden, suprised Clara by saying that she'd like to move to Japan too. She says, with the climate changes, it's way too cold to live in Umeå anymore. Everyone in Northern Sweden are moving south and in less than ten years, no one will live in Umeå anymore. The problem is, Clara's sister, Michaela, is very poor too. She can barely afford to move to another country in Europe, and she'll probably not find a job there either, since she only speaks Swedish and Japanese (compulsory in Swedish schools at this time) so she's thinking about moving to where Clara and Émile are living. But she cannot afford a flat of her own, so she'd have to live in Clara and Émile's small apartment. Émile doesn't like this idea, especially not when they have a newborn in the house too, but Clara can't say no to her younger sister like that.

Now with the birth of their twins Patrick and Claudia, Rory and Carlota do not have the time to help their relatives. The only thing they feel they can do is give their relatives a place to stay for a while if they do end up coming to America. As a result of their lack of help, their relationship with their family has grown somewhat strained.

Henry and Violette are settled in their house in NYC. They didn't expect, however, to have a new baby so soon after coming to the US. Luckily, both Henry and Violette speak English, so they haven't had too much trouble so far. Henry got a job just before Violette found out she was pregnant. He now works as a driver for a shipping company running from New York City to Philadelphia and back. He's away from home a lot, but the pay is good. Violette has found friends and support from others in the community--mostly immigrants too. Henry was at home when his son was born, and Violette was glad for that. They had a little boy, named Henry Jr. Since Henry's family is no longer supportive of him, the Scoffields have been sending letters to France, where Violette's family still lives. Out of the blue, Violette's two sisters decided they wanted to come to America too. Of course, Henry and Violette wanted to help them out as much as possible. The two of them, Amelie and Sabine, paid their own way, but are currently living with Henry and Violette.

Pia had grown up the eldest of six siblings, and she had married at age fifteen simply to get away from the poverty. Her husband was a man ten years older than she was, and he soon had her pregnant. She suffered three miscarriages before her husband was killed, trying to break up a drunken brawl. Pia wanted nothing more than to leave Italy and its sad memories behind her, and she asked for her best friend's help.

Radko & Lena are a little hesitant when it comes to helping family emigrate from Bulgaria to the US. However, they are willing to help, if they pull most of the weight on their side. The only way Lena & Radko will help is getting the passports & helping with some of the cost with airfair. Other than that, nothing. They can't help with finding a home or jobs for them. Once their family lands, they can stay at the Ognyanovy's for a few days or weeks, but then they'd need to go and live elsewhere. On the plus side, baby Sofiya is doing very well! It'll be good for Lena to have some extra hands while her family is staying with them for a little while!
