Help[Opinions] My husband is choosing middle names for our twins...
I chose the first names for our twin boys - based on a short list of names we both like (they are named after grandparents, based on first letters of English or Hebrew names). My husband gets to choose their middle names, based on pre-determined letters as well. "Spike" had ended up on our short list. I think it's cute, but did not expect it to actually be applied to a baby.
What do you think, is Spike an appropriate middle name or is it more for a dog? He is stuck on it and we can't find another "S" name, although I like Storm. (I already vetoed Cash because for the other baby because it seemed inappropriate [materialistic!] and have minimal veto power left...) My mom will freak if our baby has Spike in its name, but its not her baby. I'm curious what others think though, just to get some opinions.

I'd name the baby Michael, either fn or mn, and use Spike as a zingy nn. But I wouldn't use it as a given name, not in my right mind. Preferred letters aren't or shouldn't be set in stone, and you don't get much more Hebrew, or more English, than Michael.

Yeah I really don't like Spike at all, sorry. It definitely sounds like a dog name to me, but then again, my son is Jasper and I've been told that's a bit of a dog name too!!

Good for you for vetoing Cash. Spike is funny, and pretty fun. Personally I think I'd go with it - anything is worth vetoing Cash - but I can't speak for any taste but my own, of course. It's not totally dignified, but so what, neither is life. Lots of people have really bizarre names and do fine. Spike is kind of humble in that way, maybe - it's not pretending to escape the inevitable silliness of being, or something. I like it more than Storm for that reason, although for some reason I really like Sturm (German for Storm) - maybe ¡ust because it's "foreign" to me it sounds namier, like a surname or something.

Spike is just not a very good name in my opinion but since it's a middle name I don't think it's a terrible idea to use it for a human. However, I much prefer both Storm and Cash. (By the way, Cash is the name of guitarist Slash's son, cute kid: http://www2.pictures.fp.zimbio.com/Nickelodeon+2009+Kids+Choice+Awards+myEtL53Bp18l.jpg) Otherwise I associate the name Cash with Johnny Cash. I think of it as a name of its own and not a materialistic word name you give your child because you love money.
Other S names? What about Sky, Stormborn, Snow, Silver, Somerset, Steel, Stone, Soren, Story, Saber, Shadrach, Sailor/Saylor, Saxon, Scorpio, Scout, Seaton, Shade, Sheehan, Shaw, Sheriff (maybe not...), Shepherd, Sherlock, Sherwood, Sior (prn: Shore).

I second the Story suggestion!
I think Story is a great middle name. I came across it as the middle name of a historical figure...whose full name I can't remember at the moment, unfortunately. I think it would be a much nicer choice than Spike.

I think it's fine and would be fun. I think of Spike Jonze and Spike Lee - admittedly, their real names are Adam and Shelton, but then it's not going to be the baby's first name. And I would a thousand times rather be called Spike than Cash, which, like you say, has horribly materialistic overtones.
Also - I just checked out of curiosity, and 438 people in the UK were given the first name Spike between 1984 and 2005. I was quite surprised!

Truthfully, it seems to me a ridiculous and inappropriate name for a human. If you were considering it as a first name, I'd argue very strongly against it. But for a middle name, there's more leeway, since middle names are not generally known by others, and when they are, it's only because the name-bearer is willing to divulge it. I'm willing to bet that if you use Spike, your son will be embarrassed by his middle name and more determined than most to keep it a secret, but I don't think it would be traumatic or damaging to him. If your husband is set upon it, I would agree, especially as you chose the first names.
I love Cash, by the way, as a nickname for Cassius, but my SO says it's a drug-dealer name. And I'm not at all materialistic--I just like the way it sounds.

I think it is ok as a nickname. (There was a contestant on Top CHef the Chicago season named Spike & he was one of my favorites). But as an actual given name, it is too much. It just has a mean quality to it. I would picture a biker dude with a spiked dog collar around his neck (or a Doberman).

It reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As much as I love James Marsters, I think it's a bad idea. It almost sounds like you're expecting him to be a tearaway or something. Cash is much more appropriate than Spike.
