Maya learned of her grandfather's death through her sister. She was devastated as she had been so close to him.
The one good thing about the funeral, for her, was that all her family was there, and even though she is one of the younger cousins, she gets along well with everyone.
Ben, Maya's boyfriend, came along. They have been together since they were 15 (Ben) and 14 (Maya), around the time they first met. Ben's father left the family almost three years ago and ever since then he and Maya have been especially close since she has helped him and his mom care for his two younger siblings (then they were 15 & 11, now they are 18 and 14).
Maya wants to wait to get married. After she finishes school seems ideal to her, as she is in her second year of college. If it were up to Ben they would already be married.
