Help[Opinions] Hero on a girl
I adore Hero as a girls' name. I'm not having kids any time soon, so this is completely hypothetical, but would it be completely ridiculous on a real person? Is it usable?
Frankly, I expect most of the reaction to it to be pretty negative. It should be just a guilty pleasure, but I just love it so much. I like girls' names that end in 'o' in general, and I think the sounds in Hero are so soft and pleasant. I like its numerous literary connections as well.
Anyway, Hero on a girl? What do you think?

Shakespeare used it as his female lead's name in "Much Ado About Nothing", so I see it as feminine and usable.

I don't care for it on anyone.
To me it's a mythological figure, and beyond that a word and a concept. It's not something I would give to a child. "Hero" is one heck of a thing to live up to.
I like those short, stubby girls' names that don't end in an "ee" sound or -a, just not this one.

I think you could get away with it. It's definitely something I'd consider. If you can name girls Paris why can't you name them Hero when that's actually a girls' name? People will probably think it's weird, but non-namenerds seem to think everything is weird that doesn't appear in the top 100.

Hero seems so masculine to me because the feminine form is heroine. And it also makes me think of that awful Mariah Carey song of the same name. OTOH, Hera is gorgeous. It may have the same meaning (it's uncertain but could be related to 'hero') and she wouldn't be teased. The name seems loaded to me. Talk about pressure to conform (or perform, in this case)! ;-)

Sorry, but I think this name is fine as a GP, ridiculous IRL. Imagine being called Hero on a daily basis, and having people crack stupid jokes. Not something I would want to put a kid through.

It's so awkward to me
It's always confused me that "hero" is a male word ("heroine" of course being the female form) even though Hero in Greek mythology was a female. The name used in English speaking countries drives up the same confusion on me - it would be weird on a boy because it's a girls' name, but weird on a girl because it's a boys' noun.
I do like girls' names that end in O a lot, and I don't have a problem with the fact that it's a word, it's just that the clashing gender thing makes me feel like you couldn't win with this name.
I think Echo is a nice Greek girls' word name alternative that ends with O if that interests you at all. I know a girl named Echo.

It's better suited for pets, I'd say. They wouldn't have to deal with the confusion and possible teasing that a child named Hero would.

Hero on a girl is great! It would be strange on a boy since it's historically a feminine name. I also like girls' names ending in o.

I like it. In fact I could only endorse Hero as a girl's name. On a boy it seems really... I don't know, ridiculous. Like those people who use Danger as a middle name.
