[Facts] Esslyn & Cully
While watching the TV series Midsomer Murders I came across these two names that were used for characters and would be interested in any information available about them.Esslyn - masculine, the character it was used on was a British stage actor full name Esslyn Carmichael. It looks a bit Welsh to me but I can't find any info, the closest my searches came were Jesslyn. Cully - feminine, the character is the daughter of the main police detective. Cully Barnaby is her full name. I assume "Cully" is short for a longer name but throughout the series she's only called by that one name. My own searches brought up Cully, Switzerland and the word Cully meaning "A fool or dupe" also "Slang pal; mate".Thanks! :)Photobucket

Cully is named after Cully, Switzerland. She was conceived there.

Cully means 'the woods' or 'dove'.

I looked it up years ago and from what I found the name is Welsh. I don't recall of the information but it definitely stated it's a Welsh name.

I live in in a village near Cullompton in Devon, local people around here often refer to the town as Cully.
Perhaps she was a character from this area & therefore obtained the tag Cully?

Cully is the name of one of the hawks in T H White's The Sword in the Stone - mind you, it's a male hawk and not a particularly sympathetic character, so possibly not the inspiration for Tom Barnaby's daughter.

I always supposed they were saying Callie, which is a stand-alone name.

I noticed pies reply. the name esslyn is used in America. there are very few with the first name and over 100 people with the surname spelled esslyn. - the example of a close welsh man's name pie noted makes me even more sure that the origins of the name may be welsh. just wanted you to know , the name is a name.

this is cool as heck ! I have fallen in love with the name esslyn, I saw it for the first time on mid somer murders too! I would name a son esslyn I like it so much - I settled for naming my cat esslyn, looks welsh to me, I can't find info and jesslyn is the closest search ! - I have also assumed cully was a nickname and I find no info there either - I just can't believe we both walk the same name interest & search path! If I do find anything out, i'll come back here, or FB - Juliana richards Kincaid, look me up. peace.

Esslyn is probably made up. There's not one single result for it as a first name or a surname in UK records from 1837 to last year, and the only male Welsh name I can think of that even sounds like it is Iestyn.

If you go to one of the genealogy web sites, like familysearch.org or ancestry, there are actually quite a few people with the first name Eslyn (spelled with one s). But it's not clear that they all belong to one ethnic group so it's hard to say what the origin was.

Cully....I found this on http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Satellite/9476/news.htm:''Cully's nameJohn (Nettles) has also jokingly reiterated the story of how Cully got her name.In our younger days we spent our honeymoon in a place called Cully by Lake Geneva and it was there that Cully was conceived – and it was in relation to that experience that she got her name.''

I thought perhaps that was how the story ran (from Cully, Switzerland) but I couldn't remember hearing that explained in any of the episodes.
Thanks! :)
