This name has grown on me lately. I think it's pretty. What do you all think of the name Hilda? Know any good combos for it?

I was considering a Hilda post. My MIL's name is Hilda and she is such a lovely woman that the name first grew on me and now I like it. Her full name is Hilda Josephine - named after her grandmothers.
My SIL is expecting her third child any day now and she is thinking of Hilda May/Hilda Mae if it's a girl, to join sisters Róise and Nóra. My MIL dislikes her name - so I don't know what her reaction would be. I think it's cute and Hildie would be a great nn.

Well, I love Germanic names to start with. And I have good associations with this name -- Hilda was a kind old lady who sold my parents the house I grew up in. She was a first-generation German immigrant, and her son Henry lived next door to us. Beautiful family; wonderful people.

Rumpole's wife, "She Who Must Be Obeyed," is Hilda. So I have a soft spot for the name. Plus, the nn Hildy / Hildie is cute, cute, cute. My mother's nn for my sister, Hilary Patricia, was "Hildy Mary." I don't know where the Mary came from. She just stuck it on the end and it works.

Hmmm...I can't say I hear Hilda as "pretty", but I think she may have some charm as unexpected middle name. Looking at your list, maybe...

Oh, no, I can't agree that Hilda is pretty. I don't like that "Hil" syllable. It's the reason that I dislike Hilary\Hillary. Then there's Hildegarde, but in that case, every one of the syllables are ugly, in addition to "Hil."
