I used to teach a girl with this name but I can't bring myself to like it. It reminds me of the surname Shearer and therefore the footballer, so seems rather masculine to me.

If I could get past the Japanese word issue, I approve of the name Shira. Unfortunately, it contains Japanese particles that could lead to gender confusion or worse. Accordingly, there are better names from the Hebrew language.

I want to like it but no matter how hard I try to forget it, it reminds me of the cartoon She-Rah. The Adventures of He-Man and She-Rah.... sorry..

Exactly, but ...

Shira really is a pretty name with a great meaning if one can get past the 80s cartoon character (She-Ra?).

It is. I like the name Shira but I just loved She-Ra as a kid. It's really too bad!
