Three years have passed, and things in Bial are no longer as peaceful as they had been for most of King Walter's reign. France has declared war on Orlais, the small kingdom whose spy was responsible for the assasination of the French king five years ago. King Louis, after years of putting it off, has decided that war cannot be avoided. He has asked Bial, the country of his wife's birth and his ally for more than a decade, to join him, promising them half of Orlais if they succeed. King Walter has delayed answer for as many months as he can, not sure of the right course, and anti-French sentiment has risen again at the possibility of getting involved in "the Frenchie's mess" that most Bialan's don't think concerns them although their still-admired Princess Adelheid is now Queen of France. All this talk of war came at the worst possible time, as harvests have been very low for the past three years, with first a two-year drought that dried crops to dust and then a year of rain that rotted them in the fields. No one is sure right now what the future holds.

Agnessa has also gotten a job as the governess of the newborn Prince Christian. Arina told the family about how the king is sending help to Orlais. She is very interested in politics, and she reguolarly listens in on the king and his attendants when they are talking about matters of state. Interestingly, the Crown Prince does the same, and the two have sat listening together many times. Sometimes, the prince is allowed to be in the room with the king, as everyone has taken notice of his interest in politics. When this happens, Arina listens alone. She told Stasya about how she gets all her gossip, and Stasya is worried that she is falling for the Crown Prince. Stasya knows that the Crown Prince will have to marry a very rich and noble lady or princess, and he would never marry a comomoner like Arina. Arina, being 12, doesn't listen to her mother on this subject. According to her, she loves August as a very close friend. She is a bit jealous that he is sometimes allowed to share his opinion on some subjects, but she knows that he is a prince and she is his little sister's govorness.

Elma, always so fragile after her fever three years ago, never fully recovered, and she would've been unable to keep up with her dressmaking demands if it weren't for Franziska and Jutte always being there to help her. With the opening of hostilities between France and Orlais, war seems imminent. But public opinion in Bial remains divided. On the one hand, Orlais has been a valuable ally for the last decade, while France never enjoyed much support among Bialans. On the other hand, Bial's beloved Princess Adelheid is the queen of France. What's more, France is undoubtedly more powerful than Orlais; to move against the French might prove to be a costly mistake.
Though King Walter has not yet decided whether to join Orlais and go to war with France, and is therefore officially neutral for the time being, he has discreetly been sending men and supplies to reinforce the Orlaisian troops. Among them is Diederich, recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel because of the influx of newly graduated officers from the military academy at Okala. Diederich is proud to serve his king and country, and in truth was very glad to hear of the outbreak of war. For as much as he cherished the time spent with his family, he was a military man at heart and had been itching to get back into combat. He was sent to the front lines on his first day of active duty and was nearly killed when some French troops raided the camp, but his men were well trained and fought back bravely. Though he misses his wife and children, he also missed the adrenaline and glory that comes with war.
Three months after Diederich left home for the French-Orlaisian border, Johanna gave birth to the couple's seventh child, a boy whom she named Gustaf. By this time, Mattias had joined Josef at Okala and had quickly risen to the top of his class, like his older brother.

After many years of peace the anti-french sentiment has risen again much to marie-elisabeth's despair. Despite the many years she has spent living in Bial she still considers herself a french woman and after Orlais assasinated her dear King Louis.. the man who raised her she feels it only right the French punish them for their wrongdoing! However Marie-Elisabeth worries what will happen for her childrens prospects she had wished she might be able to secure a marriage for Louisa in either Bial or France but due to the anti-french movement this may prove impossible if King Walter decides to help the french which she of course wishes no Bialian will wish to marry her half-french daughter and if Bial don't help france no frenchman will want her as she is a citizen of Bial.

I am planning a "black ops" style assassination that will get France into multiple wars at once. As in getting Belgium, Italian providences, and the German city-states of Hesse, Westphalia, and the other smaller city-states into the war to be allies with Orlais. Get spies to dress up like officials from other countries and pick off French officials. This should cause a multi-front war that will exhaust the French. Especially considering the colonial region of New France and keeping the British out of New France.
