[Opinions] Charlie
I really like Charlie for a girl (nickname only). Some questions:What could Charlie be short for? So far I have:Charlotte - like it but think it's too common and I have many friends with this name
Charlene - I really like it but people have told me it's trashy
Charline - I've seen this as the French spelling would it be less trashy?
Charla - I don't like how it seems so made up
Charlize - see Charla and I dislike the actress
Carla - dislike the sound
Carlotta - used to warm up to it but at the moment I dislike it
Charlotta - hmm not really a favoritehmm yeah :S any ideas? what do you think of the names I've listed? How many do you know with each name?Charlie or Charley?how many people do you know who go by Charlie (male and female) and what are their full names (if they exist)?one more question...how do you pronounce Charlie? with a sh sound as in shy or with a ch sound as in chess? how do you pronounce the CH in Charlotte, Charlene etc?

Aw, I love Charlie. Mostly for a boy (as a full fn) but also I think it's cute on girls. I definitely think it ages better on males, though.I think Charlotte is the pick of your list. Mostly because it's fairly common where I live for a female Charlie / Charli (I see this spelling a LOT and would much rather see Charley in its place) to be a closet Charlotte. I know of four little girls under 6 who go exclusively be Charlie / Charli and are never referred to as Charlotte, although that is their actual name. 5-year-old Charli's parents HATED Charlotte and were so-so on a lot of the other options, including Charli as a fn. They ended up going with Charlize and regret it.I've never met a Charlie (g) with the SH sound. Ever. And pretty sure they were all Charlottes.Charlotte - nice, actually. I go back on forth on Charlotte but I'm keen on her at the moment. It's just so popular right now!
Charlene - this is pretty much the ultimate bogan name for me. See: Neighbours
Charline - Looks prettier than Charlene. Definitely less trashy because I don't have that Neighbours association. Hey, I like it!
Charla - pretty sound. I'd actually rather see Sharla. Or on seconds thoughts maybe not
Charlize - I just think of the actress tbh
Carla - I like Carla but I wouldn't call a Carla Charlie
Carlotta - meh, too elaborate with the lotta.

Charlie could be short for Charity, Charisse, or Charmaine. It could also be a nickname for Carol or Caroline, since they are both used as feminine variants of Charles.I've known one person named Charlene, a couple named Carol, and quite a few named Caroline, but none with the other names you or I listed. There is a Doctor Who companion named Charlotte who goes by Charley.I think Charlie and Charley are both good spellings.I've known one man called Charlie; I presume it was short for Charles, though I never asked.I pronounce the ch in Charlie like the ch in chess, but the ch in Charlotte and Charlene like the sh in shy.

I don't care for Charlene/Charline. To me, they seem more "made up" (because the -leen ending was a fashion in the past, when these names were popular) than Charla and Charlize. -leen/-line/-lene was like, the -leigh of the 50s.Charla seems to me like an obvious feminine form of Charles in English. I can't help thinking it does have a slightly "trashy" image - the same vibe people get from Charlene and Charmaine - but that doesn't stop me from liking it. The only thing negative about Charlize, to me, is the strength of the association with the actress. I don't think that will matter for girls named Charlize now, though. It's already being used frequently enough to break into the top 1000, which means more than it used to because a greater variety of names are being used overall.Carla & Carlotta - well, I don't think Charlie is a natural nickname. i.e. it seems artificial and affected to me, to call a Carla or Carlotta "Charlie." I like Carla, though I would not want to be named it this year. Too dated.Charmaine and Charlida are GPs of mine (Charlida is a rare made-up name that was probably used at the same time as Charlene & Charmaine and suffers the same "trashy"/old-trendy vibe problem, I know, but it doesn't really bother me much). Oh, and there is Charleigh (pronounced with a SH sound) ... if you don't mind the "trashy"/new-trendy vibe problem! I've known one or two Charlottes and Charlenes, a Charmaine, a Charlaine, and several Carlas.

Caroline is also a form of Charles, but I don't think Charlie is an intuitive nickname for it.I think Charlotte is closest. Try to warm up to Charlotta.I know only one Charlotte, met another once.Charlie or Charley, don't care for either because it's sounds very masculine, but I suppose Charley looks more feminine.I don't know anyone who goes by Charlie.Charlie is Ch as in chess. Charlotte, charlene is sh as in shy.
