[Games] The Orlais Kingdom Congrats Sign-Up (edited to add timeline after previous Kingdom Congrats)
Welcome to Orlais
Orlais is a small kingdom in Europe, bordered by the countries of Bial, France and Ferelden. Orlais is bordered on one side by the ocean and thus is a very marine orientated land with rolling green fields and furtile pastures. Like many nations, it has its dangers and one must be wary of bandits and assains when travelling through it's many cities. For more information about Orlais (keep in mind this is only a loose interpretation) see http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/OrlaisOrlais: A brief History
NOTE: This story starts only 2 years after the conculsion of Britt's Kingdom Congrats (cheers to those whose stories helped finalise the timeline!)The Orlesian people were involved in a violent war with France which ended only 2 years ago, lead seemingly by King Louis XVII. They were added in their fights by the King of Bial, Walter, though he could only aid in secret as his sister was the wife of King Louis. King Walter orchestrated the murder of King Louis, but after his death it emerged that he had never been the warlord at all, no, it was Queen Adelaïde at the helm. The war ended after King Louis's death however when Queen Adelaïde drafted a peace deal, and Orlais is now rebuilding it's empire.Louis XVIII is now King of France, with Queen Élisabeth standing by his side, and the peace treaty formed still stands. Bial also has new monarchs, King August and Queen Maria Isabel, and Bial remain an ally.Ferelden to the south is another thing however... Long ago Orlesian forces invaded Ferelden and they conquered the Ferelden forces, making Fereldan and Orlesian principality which remained for a century before Orlais was finally driven out. Orlais had heard whispers of dark times in Ferelden of late, but things seem to have settled down at last and they have also just crowned new regents, King Alastair & Queen Anora.Sign Up!UN:

Gemma was then only fifteen, and Gus was seventeen. Gus's family was destitute, barely getting through each day. As the eldest of seven, Gus sacrificed much. Gemma's heart went out to the Eldridges, as she herself was the only child of a wealthy Italian family. From then on, she began going every summer to stay with the Eldridges and help them. Her parents, Arianna and Bruno, were supportive of this and when Gus proposed to Gemma, Arianna and Bruno were happy for their daughter, even though Augustine B. Eldridge was not rich. Station: Nobility, Cousins of the king
Élisabeth has grown up at court. The only child of the former king's only sister, she arrived when she was only six years old after the death of her mother. Her father, who frequently traveled, left her int he care of her aunt and uncle, who came to view her as more their child than his. She grew up with Leopold, Philippe, Juliette, Joseph, and Bella, being especially close to Julitette and Philippe, as they were all nearly the same age. She was also friends with Ninon, with whom Élisabeth traveled to Bial with Juliette when she was married. The two cried in one another's arms when their beloved Juliette died, and they mourned with Philippe as well when they returned. They saw little Elsie (not named for Élisabeth, though some Orlaisians think so) in the care of a loving father and visit her occasionally. Since the loss of Juliette, Élisabeth has taken to spending more time with Bella, who she has always loved to baby as she is so sweet. She and Philippe shared their worries and fears when Bella married so young, and Élisabeth accompanied her as well, though she wasn't allowed to stay very long. Upon her return she married a young duke to whom she had been betrothed since she was seven.

Thought I should point out... [m]In my last post on britto08's Kingdom Congrats, I have a young princess of Orlais (full name: Cécile Béatrice Mathilde Charlotte Descoteaux) engaged to Prince Philippe Bonfils. If what I've read is correct and you're playing this game two years after britto08's congrats ended, then she'd be about 15 and Flip would be about 14. This would probably be still much too young to be married, unless they were married by proxy or something along those lines and hadn't yet consummated the marriage.Anyways, my idea for that marriage (since I haven't gotten around to writing my story -- sorry!) had been that a marriage had been arranged between a son of France and a daughter of Orlais as part of the peace treaty Adelheid thought up.So, I'll leave it up to you guys -- either ignore that I have a princess of Orlais on my post or I'll change it and come up with some other way that peace came about between France and Orlais.
As a side note, I'm not going to join this congrats. Sorry, I'd like to, but I think one story Congrats is all I can handle at the moment and since I've already signed-up (technically) for britto08's new Fairy Tale/Folktale Congrats, that one's the one I'm going to go with.

Hmmm.... I would like to work Cécile into our story somehow, we did with Juliette, so it is only fair! Perhaps Cécile studies abroad in France as to better learn their culture etc to prepare her for being a French Princess, thus why she is not actively played, but then can still be referenced?Thoughts?

DW: Delphine Mael (19)
Dsister: Clementine Gisele LaLaurie (16)
Station: Duke or Marquis ( they are close to France)Florian Gautier Cottile de Fitte is of an affluent and prominent family in Orlais. The wealthy duke has a long line that dates back to the beginnings of Orlais. Florian's father Francois Cottile had his son properly educated. Florian is extremely well versed and while his wife is at court Florian spends his time consulting with members of the Orlaisian University. Florian is handsome but meak, he is rather quiet and serious. He is of thin frame and dark brown hair. His wife Delphine is a rare beauty, but her gossip leads her to trouble. Delphine is more physical then her husband but she does not lack any of his wit. Delphine and her sister are from France. Delphine was prominent in French society when a noble of Orlais invited her to visit and read her poetry for the court. While she was visitng Florian fell in love with the beautiful and intelligent girl. Delphine has had trouble adapting to Orlaisian society as the people are less flamboyant then the French and they tend to keep to themselves leaving Delphine to be known as the gossip. Delphine's father died shortly after Delphine married Florian leaving her two sister's with out a home. Delphines sister Josephine was able to find a job has a governess in France leaving Clementine by herself. Clementine as beautiful as her sister began prositution as a means for money. On Florian and Delphine's discovery they have taken her into there home in hopes that when they have children Clementine will be there governess. Clementine as developed a taste for men that makes her behavior reckless and inappropriate. Many of the Orlaisian court suspect that she is involved in numerous affairs with affluent men.

Station: Watchman and Barber
-----Absalon arrived at King Leopold's castle when he was 17 in search of a job by which to provide for his elderly parents, who were too weak to support themselves. Needless to say, the King was extremely cautious about placing a peasant boy in charge of anything important around the Castle, so he was assigned to the stables. He stayed content with the poor living conditions, long hours, and low pay, and his potential remained unnoticed for years. However, two years later, after rescuing the King's prized mare after it broke loose, the King finally realized that Absalon could do more, and he was re-assigned as an apprentice to a highly thought-of and skilled watchman. After only a year of apprenticeship, Absalon became a watchman himself.
Soon after that, Pénélope arrived at the castle, also looking for work. She requested permission to become the King's personal barber, and was denied the permission promptly. However, it soon came to light that Pénélope (aka Penny), was a distant relative of the Queen herself. Penny got the job, and works for a slightly lower salary than Absalon.
They met, fell in love, and were married. They both live in servants' quarters inside the castle with several other servants, so they don't have much privacy. However, they are very happy and still work as watchman and barber.

Surname: Fitzroy (officially, Albret)
DH: Henri Alain Louis Benoit (20)
DW: Anne Coralie Capucine "Ninon" (20)
Station: Duke and DuchessThough they officially hold titles as Duke and Duchess in Orlais, there are many whispers about Henri and Anne. As his unofficial surname implies, Henri is the bastard son of the late King Louis XVII of France by one of his mistresses, a girl of mixed French-Orlesian background. At the time, the Dauphin had not yet been born and so Louis kept his mistress in relative comfort and secrecy in a comfortable estate near Paris. He married her safely to a French nobleman, but when the child was born a boy, Louis quietly acknowledged the boy, much to Queen Adelaide's chagrin. Upon the birth of the Dauphin, Henri was promptly ignored, but still given a comfortable livelihood by his father. When the French-Orlesian war broke out, Henri moved with his family in Orlais, believing his father to be close to death and fearing retribution from Queen Adelaide and Prince Louis. There he met and married Anne, a Orlesian duchess. There are many whispers about Anne as well, and it is widely accepted that she is the bastard daughter of King Leopold's father. There are even rumors that the former Queen and the king's mistress gave birth at the same time, to the late Princess Juliette and to Anne, and that the babes were switched, meaning that the woman who was sent to marry to the Bialan prince was really the bastard girl and that Anne is truly Princess Juliette. How much truth there is to these rumors remains unknown. Anne and Juliette looked much alike, with their fine fair hair and pale skin, and were childhood friends nearly inseparable until Juliette's marriage.Anne is a lovely girl, with long golden hair, clear blue hairs, and a very clear pale complexion, as suits nobility. She enjoys her studies, as well as outdoor activities with her father and now, Henri. She is the only surviving child of an aging Orlesian duke and his late wife, who died in a terrible bout of plague along with the couple's son and infant daughter.

Joseph rarely ever let himself get close to others, except for his mother and younger sister who he misses. Joseph has been rumored to have carnal relations with the young ladies at Court, but nothing has actually been proven. She grew up with seven brothers, but is the farthest thing from a tomboy. Diana has a very extravagant taste in clothes and jewellery. She dreaded her marriage to Joseph because even though she couldn't help but be physically attracted to him, she knew he had a reputation as a playboy. She felt that he wouldn't honor her as a husband should. She begged her father to not make her go through with the wedding, but he insisted it was for the best. Diana resents her father and Joseph's brother King Leopold, as they were the ones who arranged the wedding. The two were married at the Palais de Soleil, the Royal Summer Palace on Diana's sixteenth birthday. Diana wanted nothing less than to be married to Joseph, but felt she had no choice. However her great love is reading, she adores novels much to the displeasure of her elder brothers Leopold and Philippe. Both feel she could be spending her time more productively.
Bella's oldest siblings are King Leopold and Philippe, they're twins and much was made with regard to which twin was more suited to rule many favouring Philippe over Leopold. Bella thinks Leopold is the best ruler Orlais could wish for however, he is fair and just and cares greatly for his people. She feels that so long as Leopold and Philippe work together Orlais is in excellent hands. However though she considers Leopold the better ruler Bella adores dear Philippe, greatly respecting his opinions the two converse easily and after the death of her dearest sister Juliette, Philippe and her dear cousin Elisabeth were her emotional crutches. Being somewhat emotional Bella took her sisters loss particularly hard, she had always idolised Juliette and the two were exceptionally close.
Twenty year old Anne is the next sibling. The illegitimate child of her father and born on the same day as dear Juliette. Bella accepts Anne as a sister but the two don't share the same closeness Bella and Juliette shared.
Growing up Bella was very close to nineteen year old Joseph. However Bella now disapproves of Joseph's reckless behaviour and the two have exchanged many angry words with regard to his conduct. Bella greatly regrets her brothers behaviour and dearly wishes for his behaviour to improve missing the closeness they once shared.

Station: Brother & Sister-in-law to the KingPrince Philippe is a brave man, skilled in archery and a fine marksman. He is the second son born to his dearly loved deceased father... though he is second only by minutes as King Leopold is actually his twin. To ask Philippe if he believed that Leopold was a worthy ruler, and he would probably disagree. Many have suggested that Philippe would have been the better suited brother, but twins or not, Leopold was older regardless of the fact that it was by mere minutes, and therefore he was named Crown Prince.Philippe resides in the palace in the capital city of Orlais, Val Royeaux. Val Royeaux is a beautiful city and Philippe loves nothing more than to wander it's cobbled streets and speak with the people. He is well loved, but at the same time not necessarily well trusted. The people of Orlais are quite divided between those who support King Leopold's, and those who support Prince Philippe. Philippe's supporters think that perhaps the fact that they were twins meant that their individual attributes and suitabilities should have played a larger role in choosing which twin became King, versus just which was slightly older, and if they had, they believe Prince Philippe would be King. Naturally due to this division over which brother should rule, there has been some animosity between the two brothers. Philippe often laments this as they had been very close as children, but knows his duty to Orlais must always come first, and that includes ensuring that it has an able leader on the throne. Philippe also acts as a diplomatic liason to other countries to forge new bonds of friendship, and to secure new trade routes and the like.

Hold up! (not a sign-up, but plot point clarification)Whoever said that the Orlesians were the victors of the war?! This is what britto08 wrote about the war:"The war with Orlais has been over for some time now, mostly because after the French king's death (from drink, they say) five years ago, Queen Adelheid took things firmly in hand and proved herself an effective ruler, and the war ended with a treaty she herself helped to draft."
Sounds to me as though no one really won the war....

Surname: Descoteaux
DH: Leopold Charles Aurelien Felix (22)
DW: Joséphine Liliane Sidonie (19)
Station: King, Queen King Leopold, known as a gentle and merciful leader, rules over the kingdom of Orlais with his twin brother Prince Philippe by his side. Leopold, as the oldest son of the former king, had known his whole life that one day he would be the one on the throne, yet he had never allowed this knowledge to harden him to the thoughts and feelings of the common person. His calm and patience makes him a brilliant hunter, although he no longer has time to participate in such pursuits since becoming king. He delights in his beautiful kingdom, the way the hills gently slope and the way the ocean hits the shore. He is proud to rule such a stunning land. While he and his twin brother share some physical attributes, in personality they are very different. Leopold is the more gentle of the two. Opponents of the king interpret this as weakness, and call for Philippe to take the throne. Leopold feels the distance between he and his brother deeply within his heart and it pains him greatly to know that his brother wishes that he were king instead. His marriage with Joséphine is another point on which the naysayers argue is evidence that he should not rule. Leopold, as he often does, followed his heart when it came to selecting a bride, a future queen of Orlais, despite an uproar from the public. Joséphine was an academic's daughter, very well-read and quite beautiful (at least to Leopold, she was) but not the proper choice for a future king. They met through Joséphine's father, Leopold's French tutor, and it was love at first sight. The public have slowly warmed to Joséphine over the past three years of their marriage, but she could certainly not be described as a people's queen. (Just on the physical side of things, I see Leopold as having blonde hair with a moustache and beard, and Joséphine as having long, straight dark brown hair and green eyes. I thought I'd mention that in case anyone wants to mention the appearance of relatives. Also, I haven't written in a while so my writing is a bit rusty! I'm sure I will get better as this goes on. :p PM me if there's anything I've done incorrectly.)

Royals usually have quite long names and you will actually need to give your royal family a surname. That's my fault though as I didn't actually put that on the sign-up! Will go back and change that! Also, we usually start out with younger families because at the start of the game your family does not yet have children, and every round a few years will pass and your family will grow, events will happen, and you will expand your story...Check out the last round Britt's Kingdom congrats (http://www.behindthename.com/bb/game/4015625) if you want to see how the concept plays out.As you've choosen to play Orlias's King & Queen I hope you like to write stories too because you're family will be very central to the plot, so decent stories about your family & the kingdom etc will be a must... Once again, check out the link above to see what I mean.Tell us about your family :)Welcome again!
