Still tossing around names for our son...this came up, it's been on my list forever, but I'm not sure how usable it is? Surprisingly, DH didn't veto it ;) It's kind of cute that we found out he is a boy on MLK day (not that that would actually play into our decision, but it's just a cute little thing to note, I thought).

My best friend said she thinks it too close to the word "loser" but I'm not sure if that's a real concern...it never occurred to me.

Since we do tend to use nicknames, it should be noted that I'd probably end up calling him Luey sometimes.

Hmm - not a person I'd enjoy commemorating (Martin Luther, that is, not MLK!). Once I knew of rugby-playing brothers called Luther and Calvin, which I found pretty nasty but it certainly got the message across.

That said, it gets used, so why not if you like it?

I like Luther, it's handsome. And Luie is cutie as a nn! I do not think of the word loser at all....

The famos people that the name remind me of are: Martin Luther, Martin Luther King and Luther Vandross. I also think of Lex Luger because when we were kids we thought his name was Lex Luther! hahahahaha!

I think both associations are good (MLK jr & Martin Luther)
and I love Louie :D

I love most "Lu-" names, and Luther is no exception. However, for males, I always find "Lu-" names a bit evil-sounding because they are reminiscent of Lucifer, even though I'm not religious.

I like Luther. I think it's a handsome name. It reminds me of Martin Luther, but that's not a negative association to me as I'm a Lutheran. ;)

I'm Lutherean too, so of course that and Martin Luther King Jr. also comes to mind. Both are religious leaders who peacefully worked for change of some sort, so it's a good association.

While I agree that the association with MLK is positive, there's also the negative association with the original Martin Luther of the Protestant Reformation. He had some strange believes even for his time. Thet's why I don't like the name Luther.

I don't think it's very handsome but It's okay. For the record the name doesn't make me think of the word "loser". It makes think of the famous namesakes MLK and Luther Vandros.
