I would assume Nate was a nickname, as I believe would the general public, but I doubt you'd actually have people trying to address him by Nathan or Nathaniel. I suppose if I really wanted to use Nate as is and not have my child asked often what his full name is, I might put it in the mn slot...scratch that; can't think of any candidates for first name that flow with it. Okay, back to Nate in front:

ETA: Just read the post mentioning Jonathan. I think Nate is a valid choice as a nickname for Jonathan.
