I like Marius a lot and I prefer it to Mario. Another name you may like is Mariano.
My favorite nickname for Marius would be Mars.
Other options:
Mar
Mari
Maru
Even Mario I suppose could work as a nick name
Anything else, I think, would be a bit of a stretch.
