Cat: Freedom (black, male)(1)Beginning: Andy and Ema were married just a few months ago, in Ema's home country of Spain. The two of them moved to South Africa last month, when Andy was transferred to a national news agency there. Andy, having no family connections, has traveled the world and loves being a journalist. Ema stuck closer to home, but has been to many countries in Europe. She is content to follow Andy wherever he goes, but hopes that they will eventually end up back home in Spain. Year 1: Pet: Dog
Andy and Ema adopt a stray dog into their home. His name is Aitsa, for his ever-present excited demeanor. Andy thinks Aitsa is only a few months old, because he has huge brown paws and seems to be growing like a weed. Ema enjoys having Aitsa around, especially when Andy is away on assignment for a few days. Year 2: Random: Someone is in an accident
A few weeks ago, while on assignment, Andy was in a car accident. Their "news van"--or what passes as a news van in South Africa--lost traction on a sloping road and rolled down into an embankment. Andy suffered a fractured arm and slight concussion. The other three men with him suffered similar injuries. Thankfully, they were able to return in one piece. Year 3: Family Event: Move: Canada
From the hot country of South Africa to the much colder country of Canada! Andy and Ema packed up and moved this past year. Andy's contract with the African news agency was up, and he was itching to travel again. Ema has enjoyed Canada thus far, and finds the northern country suits her much better than Africa did. Luckily, Aitsa cleared customs and was allowed into Canada with his owners. Year 4: Travel: Australia
After a few months in Canada, Andy took a two-week assignment to cover a native Australian/Aboriginal festival. He took Ema along with him, and treated it like a second honeymoon. Andy has been to Australia in the past, and he enjoyed renewing contact with a few of his journalist buddies in the land down under. Ema enjoyed the ride, but has grown accustomed to Canada's cooler climate and was happy to return to their little house. Year 5: Family Event: Broken Bone
Well, life is never dull in the Smith household. While playing pond hockey with some neighbors, Andy took a puck to the face and broke his nose. After two hours in the hospital waiting room, he was fixed up and sent home. Ema worried about him, but knows that Andy has always been adventurous and will continue to participate in somewhat risky activities. Year 6: Adoption: Asia, boy, 6-7 yo
Three years ago, when they moved to Canada, Andy and Ema began the process of adoption. While Ema has always wanted children of her own, she and Andy had been unsuccessful for several years, and she didn't want to wait any longer. Now, finally, their wishes have been granted. Aleksandr Borislav Marlov joined the family on June first. He is a six year old boy from Russia, and was orphaned at the age of two. Alek is a happy child, and even though his transition to the Smith family has been a little bumpy, he is quickly returning to his old self. Year 7: Birth: girl, SO hair, straight hair, blue eyes
As is sometimes the case, Andy and Ema found out they were expecting their first child just a month after adoping Alek. Their daughter, Esperanza May, was born eight months later. Alek is enjoying his younger sister, but thinks she is too fragile, sometimes. Year 8: Job: Promotion
Apparently, Andy has been doing a good job here in Canada. He's really settled down a bit since he and Ema had kids, and he's been doing some of his best work recently. He was promoted to senior journalist, and given a pay raise to match. Andy is enjoying his new responsibilities--and the luxury of getting top pick of upcoming assignments so he gets good things close to home. Year 9: Family Event: Fulfill a Life-long dream
This past year, Andy surprised Ema by telling her that he had chosen an assignment in Barcelona to cover the annual "running of the bulls". He told her that she and the kids would be coming along too, so that Ema would get a chance to visit her family and show off her children. Ema was overjoyed, since she hadn't gotten to spend extended time with her family for several years. After Andy's news coverage was finished, he took a three-month sabbatical so that he and the family could remain in Spain with Ema's family. A less happy occurrence this year, Aitsa passed away. He was nine years old which, for a dog growing up in South Africa, is about the expected lifespan. The family was sad to see Aitsa go, especially Alek, who had bonded with the dog. Andy promises that they'll get a new dog in the future.Year 10: Adoption: France, girl, 11-12 yo
Eveline Axelle Perrere joined the Smith family this year. Just seven months ago, Andy and Ema applied to the same international adoption agency they adopted Alek from. Surprisingly, within two months, they were matched with "Evie", an eleven year old girl from France. She is a quiet, withdrawn girl with a history of abuse and abandonment. Ema has been working hard to draw her out of her shell, but the one Evie has bonded with is Essie--her three year old adoptive sister. Year 11: Pet: Gerbil
This year, Andy had planned to get Alek a dog for his birthday, but when the family adopted Evie, that plan changed slightly. Evie has an intense fear of dogs, so Andy and Ema judged it best that they refrain from getting a second dog. Instead, they made Alek and Evie collaborate and come up with a pet they could both agree on. Alek doesn't like cats, and Evie didn't like his suggestion of an iguana. Therefore, the pair agreed on getting a gerbil--small, with fur, but not intimidating. The gerbil they picked out is a medium-sized brown and white female, named Rosie. Year 12: Pet: Fowl
Unexpectedly, Evie brought home a second pet to the family this year. Her science class had a few live chicks from their egg-warming experiments. Evie volunteered to take them. So, when she showed up at home with four small, squirming chicks one afternoon, Ema was very surprised. Not wanting to squelch the happy spark in Evie's eyes, Ema and Andy agreed that she could keep the chicks on two conditions--if there were any roosters, she'd have to give them away, and she had to take all the responsibility for their care. Evie dove into taking care of her new chicks. She enlisted Alek's help to build a coop, and Essie's help to feed them every morning and night. The chicks have grown into small hens now that produce a good number of eggs every few days. Evie named all four chicks, once she knew they were all hens--Cindy, Suzie, Lucy, and Dollie. Evie has enjoyed caring for her hens, and Ema has seen improvements in almost every area of Evie's life. Year 13: Family Event: Asked to be godparents
This year, Andy and Ema were asked to be godparents. Their close friends, Liam and Betsy Lewis, had their first child--a little girl named Laura Rose. Liam and Andy have been friends for many years and their request came as little surprise. Year 14: Adoption: Austria, triplets, 5 yo
A few years ago, Ema and Andy again contacted the international adoption agency and placed a third request for adoption. This time, they were given the chance to adopt triplets from Austria. Their single mother had been neglecting them, and they were put into the system at eight months old. Now five, they were put for international adoption when it appeared unlikely that an Austrian family would adopt the three of them together. Adam, Amalia, and Benedikta are bubbly, rambunctious children who have added new vitality to the Smith family. Ema has her hands full now, having just doubled the amount of children in the household. Year 15: Adoption: your choice, b/b, 16-17 yo
Having just adopted triplets, Andy and Ema weren't expecting to adopt again; however, when Alek came to them and said that one of his Russian penpals had lost his family in a tragic accident, they couldn't refuse to help. It turns out that Alek's penpal and his twin brother were the only survivors of a violent housefire in Russia. The boys, being sixteen, had almost no chance of being adopted in their country, and Andy and Ema decided that they would take the boys under their wing in Canada. Nikolai and Evgeni are quiet, but chatter on with Alek in Russian pretty frequently. In other news, Rosie the gerbil passed away this year at the ripe old age of four. Year 16: Family Event: Fulfill Life-long dream
In a house with four seventeen year olds, there's bound to be drama. So, when Evgeni started "dating" Evie, Andy and Ema had a problem. Since they aren't blood relatives, Evgeni and Evie saw no problems with their relationship; however, when they broke up five and a half months later, Evie was crushed. Ema decided to do a little something for her oldest adopted daughter, and took her on an impromptu weekend vacation to Nova Scotia, a place Evie has wanted to visit for a long time. Evie had a wonderful time ther with Ema and, although things aren't back to normal between her and Evgeni, they aren't awkward anymore--and Andy and Ema have instituted a no-dating policy between adopted siblings. Year 17: Random: someone is in an accident
This year, the Smith family is dealing with the fallout from an accident early in the year. While driving to school one day, their eldest four were in a car accident. The icy roads caused both cars to lose control and slam into each other. Alek suffered head injuries and a broken arm. Evie suffered nasty lacerations, but no broken bones. Nikolai suffered a concussion and a collapsed lung, as well as a broken arm. Evgeni, who was not buckled, suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as a spinal fracture which left him paralyzed for several weeks before it healed. He is mostly recovered now, but the psychological trauma for all four of the kids makes them very wary when they get into a vehicle of any sort. Year 18: Family Event: Family Reunion
It has been a much-anticipated event--Ema's family held a reunion in Spain! Of course, the Smith family was expected to attend, so Andy and Ema packed up their troupe and few to Spain. All four of the older kids are attending community college this year, so they were able to go for the week-long event. Next, they want to go to Russia to see old friends. Andy says, maybe next year. Year 19: Pet: Cat
Now that all of her hens have passed away (they've died over the years), Evie convinced Andy and Ema that they should get a cat. Ema agreed, and she and Evie adopted a small black kitten from the local shelter and named him Freedom. The younger kids love him and play with Freedom constantly. Year 20: Family Event: Move: Your Choice
Finally, Ema has realized her dream of moving back to Spain to be near her family. Andy accepted a long-term overseas journalism assignment and expects to be in Spain for the next five or six years. With their four oldest adoptees finally out on their own (Alek in the United States for school, Evie returning to France, and Nikolai and Evgeni going back to Russia), moving out of the country seemed to be the thing to do. Only having four children to pack up and move halfway around the world seemed almost simple to Andy and Ema--who are much more used to their eight kids roaming around.
