[Opinions] Ravenna

I've always loved the name Ravenna and have started thinking about it again. I first heard it from Oscar Wilde's poem 'Ravenna' and it is also a city in Italy. What do you think?~Kaitlin :)

I have been liking the name Ravenna for a while, but I don't know if I'd actually use it on a child. For me, the sound seems to fall with Vanessa or Rowena, both names I also like.I always love a good poetry connection!! But then again, I also love the sound of Vienna, but this is another name I would be cautious of using for a baby. Naming after cities is a dubious thing, imo.

Ravenna was the name of an evil person in Hindu Mythology

I don't care for it. Along with the poem and Italian city it's the name of quite a few North American towns too. I've even been to one of the Ravennas (wasn't impressed) so I have that association. Also, I've always heard it prn rah-VAN-nuh or ruh-VEN-nuh. For some reason the accent on the second syllable sounds makes it sound particularily nasal to me.

I like it...i didn't know it was a city in Italy, nor do i know Oscar Wilde's poem (do know Oscar, don't know his poems!) but i like it, could certainly grow on me..

I immediately think of Oscar Wilde and his poem, which I think is lovely. He's one of my favourite writers.I really like it, because it sounds less like "raven" (which sounds like "raving" to me) and more like "ravine" to my ears. I like the mental image of a dark, cool ravine, filled with greenery, than I do a crazy person.Unfortunately, it could be perceived as something you've randomly made up to make the name Raven kewler, which is too bad. I think it'd be a fine middle name, though.Array

It's nice, and does seem a little Italian sounding to me. I love the sound of Raven, but the meaning turns me off (they're carrion birds, and definitely not too pretty up close). I think Ravenna is too glamorous sounding to be a good compromise on Raven, but as a city name it's okay. Maybe a little fanciful, if that's your style.
In real life a Ravenna might turn into Rave, Ravie, or Raven, among friends. - chazda
