[Opinions] Murphy for a girl?
Does Murphy for a girl work? Possibly with a frilly middle name.Frilly middle name suggestions would be great!

I don't really like it, but plenty of masculiney, surnames are being used on girls recently, so it would be useable.

*shrug* I like itI think it has a scrappy 1930's thing going for it. It's old-fashioned new-woman. I think of film noir and dangerous dames.I'd work with that feel and combo it likeMurphy Greta
Murphy Lucille
Murphy Claudette
Murphy Barbara
Murphy Jean
Murphy Louise

aaaactually... I think it could be kind of cute. I've never thought of Murphy as a "people-name" before - having known two dogs by this name. But it would be pretty cool on a little boy. And I can see the cute-sy-ness of it on a girl too. While I don't think it would be a very solid name longterm, it certainly has great potential as a nickname. Let me see here, what about as a nickname for a fn with the "mur" sound and a mn with the "fee" sound:
Mercedes
Merla
Minerva
Miranda
Murielle
Myrna
Myrtle
Fiametta
Fiona
Fionola
etc
I kinda like Mercedes Fiametta nn Murphy. :o)

I actually kind of like the idea. I definitely a fan of it for a boy better, but I could it see it working for a girl too. How about:
Murphy Isabeau
Murphy Adalyn
Murphy Evangeline
Murphy Leona
Murphy Fiona
Murphy Jacinta
Murphy Lucinda
Murphy Helena

Hmm...when I really think about it, I don't like it. However, when I first saw the subject line of your post, my initial reaction was that it was kind of cool. I think it could work. I certainly wouldn't think of it as being extremely bad if I heard on a real person. For what it's worth I prefer it on a girl than on a boy.

You knowI didn't even think of Murphy Brown. Now that you mention it, that does make me more able to see it as a girl's fn.

No, and I don't even like Murphy for a boy.

Murphy Brown wore it well. I liked it on the character, but don't think I'd use it in real life.

I'm with Bear on this one. As a fn it sounds much too masculine. If it were a family surname, it would be fine as a mn for a girl. I even have a thing for surnames as mns on girls. But nope nope, not as a fn, and I think a frilly mn with it would make it seem even more absurd.

Ack! (ETA)It's my mother's maiden name. I associate it so strongly with my grandfather that I have a hard time seeing it on a girl. My brother was considering using it for one of his dd's mns, which I had no problem with. As a family surname-mn it's fine. But as a girl's fn? Not attractive in the least to my ears. Much too masculine sounding.ETA: By way of peace offering for freaking out like that, could I interest you in another Irish surname, like Flannery (as in the author Flannery O'Connor) or Kinsella? They sound more feminine to me. (Apologies to any Flannerys or Kinsellas out there that object.)
