[Opinions] Mavis
There's a young woman in my summer class with this name. I think she's from an African country (not sure about which one), since her last name sounds African.I haven't put much thought into the name Mavis in the past. After all, I've never met a Mavis (young or old) until now. But now I've been thinking about it quite a bit.I have mixed feelings about Mavis. I kind of like the origin of the name. but on the other hand, a lot of people find it to be old-fashioned. What do you think of Mavis?(On a side note, I also have two Anastasias in my class!)

Yeah for Anastasias!I agree Mavis is dated. I think of Mavis Winkle (an Irish pub near my old house) and Mavis Beacon (a typing program). Plus it is really similar to Avis (car company) so I see it more as a brand or company name than being suited for a person. It also is a bit harsh sounding.

I prefer Avis, though I rather like Mavis as well. I find it oddly not old-fashioned at all, though it is very old. Like Maeve. It's eerily, agelessly ancient.

I should like it. I like most feminine names that end with -is. But it has a mothy dusty feel that I can't shake. I think I have lumped her in with Maude, which is just not quite ready to come back yet.

Mavis makes me think of a girl in a poodle skirt with a cardigan and horn rim glasses that is quiet and doens't really have a lot of friends.... she is really interetesting once you get to know her and she grows up to be wildly successful!

I really like Mavis -- it calls to mind a studious, quirky girl.

I've never heard it before. It's OK, but not really my style.
