I've been thinking about the name Ginger.
Ginger is not really my style, but it has a nice sound to it. I think it works well as a nickname. However, I'm wondering if Ginger is usable as a full name. It's because "ginger" is often used in a derogatory manner to describe people with red hair (especially ones with pale skin and freckles, a la South Park).
I think Ginger is fine as a first name (as long as it's Ginger and not Jinger), but I'm curious to know what others think.
What is your opinion on Ginger? Do you think it's usable as a full name?

I've always had a secret thing for Ginger as a name. I love the repeated soft "g" sounds and I love feminine names ending in "-r." Ginger Kate and Ginger Molly are my stock combos.
But I know it's not most people's taste. It has a ditzy / cheap association for many people that I find unfair. While it is a name in its own right, if it's used as a nn for Virginia then any Ginger could have options if she doesn't like her name.

I will admit that ditzy/cheap association makes me want to say no, it's not usable, but I've heard worse names. I personally wouldn't use it, but I won't flip out over other people doing so.

This is a guilty pleasure name of mine, I just love it. I think of the spice Ginger, not necessarily red hair although I like that association too. It's so pretty and feminine. I would love to use it but probably never will because of it's stereotypes which I also find unfair and a shame.
There are two Gingers in my subdivision and they are far from "ditzy" or anything of the sort. They are upper middle class, educated women with children. I love the name!

I like Ginger, the name and the spice.
It's probably too great a stretch for you, but you mentioned Ginger as a nickname for Virginia and it occurred to me that most of the sounds are also present in Iphigenia (albeit in a different order). Last I knew, you still didn't have a nickname for Iphigenia you were thrilled with. I think Ginger could work. :)

I love the name Ginger (of course I AM one of those pale red haired people with freckles, well not many freckles but my mom didn't at my age and has tons now) and I never watch South Park.

I guess it could be okay as a nickname for Virginia, but its ridiculous on it's own. I have nothing against people with ginger hair (my boyfriend is a redhead) but it seems just as silly as naming a kid Blonde or Brunette.

I think it really only suits someone with red hair and then it starts to seem silly cause of the derogatory manner. As a "ginger" I've been called it enough that it being a name seems odd to me. It can work though.

I don't like it. It sounds more like a nickname rather than a given name.

Funny you should mention this because it keeps popping into my head lately too. My thoughts:
It has a nice sound and a nice look. It feels soft and sweet, but not overly frilly because I can tie it to ginger root. If I liked ginger more, I might like the name more. Not that I dislike ginger. But I digress. I don't mind the ginger slang term because I love red haired/pale skinned/freckled people. I always wanted to look that way when I was a kid.
I think as a fn though it has too much potential to feel overly frilly or tacky (which is how I used to feel about it in any context), and so I prefer it as a nn for Virginia. Although there are other nns for that I love even more, so I don't seriously consider using it.

I completely share your problem. I love the name Ginger, and the Ginger Rogers connection. I too am worried about Ginger as a derogatory slang term.
I would hesitate to use it now. Even though I hate when people refer to redheads as "gingers," I think it's too forgone to stop.
EDIT: Also, it is absolutely not a nickname for Virginia. That's an awful idea.

I think it's usable as a full name, but I'd prefer it in the mn spot.
