What are your thoughts on Mel - just Mel - for a boy?
I was trying to think of how I'd honour a Melissa in a boy's name, and figured Mel was the most obvious thing. I don't know about choosing a longer, unrelated name, like Melvin or something (though I thought Meallan or Mellan was pretty awesome), but just Mel seems closer to the real thing, and it kinda has a nerdy retro thing happening.
Uhh, combos?

Mel Blanc! He was cool.
It is a cute little name, and needs saving from horrible associations by getting lots of use by good people. I think it's fine on its own - Mellan is too melony for me, but there are some fun surname options, like Melhuish! Or Melville. Or Mellor, or Melbourne, or even Melrose. Or, it would actually work pretty well as an unusual nn for Michael.
I could combo these long versions but can't seem to come up with much for just Mel. Mel Walter? Mel Wilbur? Mel Stanley? Mel Harold?

I like Mel. It does have that retro chic thing going on, like Max and Lulu. Mel is a good Irish saint's name all on its own (Mellan just reminds me of Melon). On the flip side, it does remind me of Mel Gibson, who is not my favorite person around. If you wanted to get funky, you could use the Irish name Maelíosa /mel EE uh sa/, which means "servant of Jesus" and is a man's name (maybe as a middle?) I think it has been anglicized Malise. Some other ideas: Carmelo, Melchior (I actually totally love this name), uh... Melquíades?

Maeliosa is new to me, but I likes it! I'm sort of a sucker for Mael-. It's Maeleachlainn's fault. I also am often drawn to masculine -a names.

Hurray for Maeliosa! I love it. I mentioned it the last time there was a Mel thread. My husband has a great-uncle Maeliosa.

Freaky. I was just thinking about doing a thread on Mel (m) this morning.
My cousin had a little boy named Mel, just Mel. I'm not sure if she spelled it Mel or Mael, but she said it was after the ancient Irish saint. I googled it once and found the reference. He was an associate of St. Patrick I think, or another well known Gaelic saint. I've always loved the sound of "mel" in names (so warm and friendly) so the fact that it is also an Irish male name in its own right was most welcome. Another name that you could use as a formal name is Melchior.
If I used it for a girl, it would be a nn for Imelda.

Awww Mael. I have been meaning to stop forgetting about that name because I do really like it. Especially after just combo-making myself into liking the sound of Mel. Now I must have all kinds of fun with Mael tomorrow!
And while I'm here, I didn't especially think to pair Mel with Irish things, probably because I hadn't made the Mael connection. Mel Proinsias! Mel Padraig! Mel Eamonn! And I have to like Mel Columba, of course. And so many more of those are great. Mel Benedictus, ooh.

You know, it's not bad. I've never really thought about it before. It has sort of a down-to-earth guy feel, but with a bit of humor in it. And I do love Mel Brooks, so that helps!
