Ulrich is the first name I think of, because a branch of my family is from Germany and our earliest known ancestor was named Ulrich.

Are you looking for examples? I think very German sounding strong names are fine.

Gernot! One of my new secret favorites! (Not so secret now, I guess) I'm totally in love with Gernot for some weird reason but I can't tell anyone in real life. A friend recently said Gernot was probably the worst name she had ever heard (not knowing that I like it). I didn't say anything. I'm such a coward!

why is it the worst name ever? I think it's neat! Is it old fashioned where you are?

Yes, very old-fashioned and I think it has always been rare. The friend I mentioned likes trendy / popular names (most of my friends do), so I wasn't surprised about her not liking Gernot but the worst name ever?
