Kit--short for Christopher or Katherine
Flip--short for Philip or Philippa
You can shorten last names into nicknames too.
Or you can take a characteristic of the character and use that. There are characters in "an Old Fashioned Girl" by Louisa May Alcott named "Spider", "Rumple" and "Sherry".
