I think Doris could come back. She's not as fusty as all that, there is a clear silvery quality to the "isss" ending. Also the fact that she has mythological ties works in her favour, imo.

I like a lot of names with the 'or' sound in them so while I don't really like Doris, I don't hate it either. It does have potential because of the nickname Dory (or Dori), which I find adorable.

Oh, I love Doris! She's so brassy and no-nonsense.

I think it could have life. It's no worse than Ruby, really, for being dated, and I think it has the "right" style to be made new again. I bet Dora would be starting to show up again, if not for Dora the Explorer. Doris is just a little bit "younger" than Ruby, I guess, not yet old enough for nostalgia to fade the image of bingo-wings and make it seem more romantic & antique.

Reminds me, I saw a girl of about 8 or 9 at a park whose mother addressed her as Eudora. And that didn't seem fusty. I don't think Doris would either, actually. I've also encountered a toddler Marilyn (I read the names of kids signed up for swim lessons along with my son).

You're not alone, I like it too. It's simple and really quite pretty, once you get past the bridge-playing lady business.:) I think it got freshened up for me by meeting a German Doris who was cute and fun and 20-something.
I can't quite see a baby Doris, not yet. But a couple of years ago I could never have imagined a baby Ruby, and now there are tons of them! And Doris is way better than Ruby.
