Cathy on a 35 year old is commonplace. Cathy on a 21st-century baby is retro cool. There are so many Kates, Cates, and Katies right now, Cathy would be a distinctive choice.
I've known at least 15 Kathies, Kathys, and Cathys, most of whom are in the 30-60 year range now. I couldn't begin to guess how many of them were Katherines (of any spelling) or Kathleens. At the moment, I work with a Kathryn (no nn) and a Katherine who goes by Kathie.
I know a Katherine (Kath) and a Kathryn (no nn) in their twenties.
I know quite a few small children and teenagers with the name as well. The most common spelling is Katherine followed by Kathryn, and they're almost all Katie or Kate. I also know a ton of Katelyns (in every spelling under the sun) who seem to be Kates and Katys, too.
Under age 2, I know one Katharine (Katy), one Catherine (no nn), and one who's just Kate.
My favorite spelling is Catherine, but my favorite nicknames are spelled with K: Kit, Kate, Katy, and Kathy.
