It's my favorite name for a girl and I actually appreciate all three pronunciations (Heh-lay-na, Hell-ehn-ah, Hel-ee-na), but would use Heh-lay-na for my own daughter. That's the prn I default to, but obviously, I'd pronounce it the way the person bearing the name tells me to pronounce it.

HEL-ena for the town, hel-AY-nah for a person.

HEL-en-uhAs far as I know, that's the standard English pronunciation.

HELEN-a or hel-LAY-nadepends on how the person likes it pronounced.

HELEN-aThe only Helena I know was named after the city. Conveniently this is also my favorite pronunciation, so it was nice to get it confirmed when I met her.I do know a German Helene, which she pronounces closely to "he-LAY-na" even though that's way americanized. I'd say that's my least favorite pronunciation. I do consider these three (HELENa heLAYna heLEEna) equally "valid."

I pronounce it more like ha-LAYN-uh.Guess I'm weird :PThough "heh" and "ha" aren't far off from eachother when you say the name quickly.

heh-LAY-nuhThat's how the only person I've ever met with this name pronounced it. Helen-a is okay, too. I prefer the heh-LAY-nuh pronunciation.

I say Hell-ee-nuh. I also like it said Hell-ay-nuh.

Helen-alike the capital of Montana.

Agreed.I really dislike the other pronunciations.

That's the association I have as well. I pronounce it "Helen + a" as well. Or put another way, the stress is on the first syllable. Also, Helena Bonham Carter. I've always heard her name pronounced like the capitol of Montana.

I like the pronounciation he LAY nah but I have also heard HELL en ah so I wouldn't assume.

he-LEE-nuh or he-LAY-nuhHi!!!!!!!

This. he-LAY-nah is most common where I'm from, but if you go to more rural areas in my same state you hear he-LEE-nuh a lot, but I've never encountered a HEL-en-ah

HEL-en-ah

My first guess would always be heh-LAY-nuh. But I sure wouldn't say it with confidence.

I pronounce it HEL-en-a (like Helen with an "a" at the end). I adore he-LE-na, but my first inclination is to pronounce it HEL-en-a. I've also heard it pronounced he-LAY-na and he-LEE-na.

HEL-en-a, like the cityAlthough I've heard the name said hel-AY-na before. I think people would go either way, and it would be a name you'd have to correct no matter how you preferred to say it.

hel-AY-naThe pronunciation of this name changes my opinion of this name a lot. Not a fan of HEl-en-ah or Helen but I think hel-AY-na is beautiful. It's also how I hear this name when I read it.

he-LAY-nuhBut the one Helena I know pronounced it he-LEE-nuh.

I grew up with a girl named Helena (pr. heh-LAY-nuh) so that's the one that's most familiar to me. I also like HEH-leh-nuh.

heh-LAY-nah. Anything different is robbing a potentially beautiful name of it's beauty and making it ugly.

HELL-en-uh. I basically pronounce it Helen with an a on the end. I'm from the western/central US, if that makes a difference.

dittoAnd I'm from the Midwest. And I knew a few Helena's when I went to school in England, and they pronounced it the same. I've heard it hell-ay-nah, from native Spanish speakers. Like Elena, with an 'h' at the front.

HELLina in English.

I alternate between huh-LAY-nah and HELL-ah-nah. Tonight I think I like hell-ah-nah better, but tomorrow it may be different.
