Of the Royal House of Gilain, of the kingdom of Tayel.
The ten years have not been easy ones for the royal family of Tayel. Shortly after Gwen's marriage, the situation with Haarlsgard became serious. The countries seemed on the brink of war. Then Rosa had the idea of sending Mira, Gabe, and Lily to spend some months in Haarlsgard on a goodwill mission. The charm of the royal children and their families pleased King Karl, and Lily's diplomatic gifts soothed realtions between the two kingdoms. King Karl hinted strongly that a match between the young Princess Viviana--not yet eleven at the time--and his own grandson Prince Christian--already twenty-two--would go a long way to bindn their kingdoms. The royal children left Haarlsgard with no definite promises, but all determined that their baby sister would not marry the man who was almost as old as Mira already.
The next few years were perfectly peaceful, and the family grew tremendously. Mira and Arthur bore three more children after Edmund. Marina is an adventurous girl, much like her Aunt Gwen was at her age, and she is a better rider and runner than most of her older cousins. Jocelyn, or Joss as she is affectionately known, is the opposite, being very shy and preferring to stay with her family. She is very young, though, and everyone hopes she will grow out of it. Baby Zachary was a surprise, as Mira and Arthur had thought that she could not have anymore children, but he was a very welcome one. He is chubby and pink and the delight of his older brothers and sisters. Anna has grown into a very practical young adolescent, very pretty and with excellent leadership skills. Her parents already see the great queen she will become. Edmund is like his favorite uncle, the one he was named for, sweet and loving but with his Uncle Nico's scars and limp to remind him to temper his adventurousness.
Gabe and Delia tried for years to have another baby after Nate, both wanting a daughter, and had been given up for two years when Delia became pregnant again. To their delight it was a girl, a beautiful baby daughter they named Persephone, for Delia's much-beloved grandmother. Persephone was a delight to her brothers, who are very protective over her. Jem and Nate are very close, almost like twins, though they are very different. Jem is already a sea-minded boy and dreams of being a sailor, while Nate has expressed interest in joining the diplomatic service like his Aunt Lily. Seph, as she is known, is a delightful little tomboy, always tagging after her brothers and her father. She is the very image of her mother, and likes to dress like her when it is necessary for her to dress up.
Lily and Chris had several more children after Elizabeth, though it always took time for them to conceive. Elizabeth was joined by Seraphina, Adam, and just recently by the twins Magdalena and Thomas. Elizabeth is very much like her mother, with the same stunning beauty and the same observant, passionate nature. She loves people and is very popular with the children of the palace and seems extra sensitive to them, always seeming to pick up on things no one else does. She loves to help take care of her younger cousins and siblings, and she and Nate are already planning joining Anna's diplomatic service together. Seraphina, like Elizabeth, is very sensitive and observant, but is also sensitive emotionally. She cries easily, and Lily and Chris are worried that life will be harder for her than it needs to be. She is a wonderful artist, and her paintings and sketches are popular in the palace. Adam is a darling, rough-and-tumble little boy who inherited his mother's propensity for games and fun. He loves to make up games and teach them to the other children. The twins are beloved by their parents, and though too young for much personality yet Magdalena already seems the more demanding of the two.
Gwen and Callum lost no time after their deferred marriage, and the twins Justin and Fiona came barely a year later. Justin has his mother's adventurous soul and her need to do things on his own, while Fiona is quieter and more likely to plan things out to make sure they come to her advantage. Gwen worried a little when this tendency first appeared in her daughter, but Fiona's loving nature balances out any self-interest. Justin and she are as close as Gwen and Remus, which warms the hearts of all their family. They waited a long time to have more children, but on purpose, as they wanted to be able to still devote themselves to the children they had and their duties as part of the royal court and children of the queen. Melinda, a sweet and bubbly little girl who loves butterflies and flowers and anything outside, came five years after the twins. She has always preferred to be outdoors, sticking flowers in her hair and staring up at the sky and exploring. Baby Peter is a sweet toddler who loves to follow her around, and has already developed a way with animals; not even the meanest of the stable cats scratch him.
Remus and Susanna also had twins, Caroline and Hermione, and then decided their family was done. Theo is a beautiful and serious girl with her father's tendedcy toward studiousness. She is also a beautiful singer and dancer, and recently revealed herself to be a talented actress when she performed in one of the plays Elizabeth loves to put on for the family. She knows that she was conceived out of wedlock, and it does not bother her one bit. Her parents called her the reason they were allowed to be together, and she actually secretly feels rather special in a way, being what brought her parents' marriage about. She is a very good older sister to Oliver, who depends on her as he lost his sight a year ago from the measles. It was a very difficult time for the family when that happened, but Remus and Susanna loved him just as much as ever and helped him adjust. He misses books very much, but his cousins and siblings are always very willing to read to him. He is finally regaining his independence, though his parents still insist he has help on the stairs. The twins, Caroline and Hermione, were at first afriad of this new brother who couldn't see, but as he was still the same as ever it passed after a few days. The twins are as identical as it is possible to be but for one thing--Hermione is and has always been a little taller than Caroline. The two are very different, however. Caroline is a force of nature and likes to explore and try things and push limits that sometimes drives her parents to distraction. Hermione is quieter, preferring to read and draw and learn things. The two are fiercely protective and loyal to one another, even as such little girls, and together the two balance out.
Nico thought he would never marry, as his abdoman was very scarred, his face a bit scarred, and he walked with a limp since his accident. But to his surprise, his long-time friend and the girl he had carried a torch for since childhood boldly proposed to him. She was the daughter of an ambassador from the nearby kingdom of Celiane and had spent most of her childhood and much of her adolescence in Tayel. When she was ninetten and Nico eighteen, she proposed to him. She didn't see scars, she said, only the friend she had loved since childhood who had brought her flowers and given her a puppy as a birthday gift and always had soemthing kind to say or do. The two married, and not long after they had a son, Charles. He is a whirlwind of a little boy, difficult to make stay still and almost impossible for his father to catch. Already he understands that his father cannot run and play as fast as he can, and he adjust accordingly. He adores his father and wants to be just like him. A few years later Sebastian came, a dear fat little baby who was just learning to run and speak sentences when a sister, Annabelle, arrived. She was born small as a bird, and Nico already calls her his little lark. They plan to wait for more children.
Viva, the sweet and slightly spoiled baby of the family, almost caused an international incident when she was sixteen. Though Rosa and Thaddeus had never had any intention of allowing their daughter to marry a man twelve years her elder, King Karl sent Prince Christian to talk of the match and arrange something. Christian was in no way interested in the tiny--though beautiful--princess, and was quite happy with his mistress and four illegitimate children, but he would have married her had Viva not run away the night after he arrived. Knowing her parents would not wed her to such a man but wanting to put herself out of his reach forever, she ran off with her sweetheart. Prince Rashid of Jamaad, a desert nation a few weeks journey to the south, had been visiting Tayel for some months, and the passionate Vivahad fallen whole-heartedly in love with him. He adored her as well, and the two decided to be married quietly and put themselves out of the grasp of Christian (and Rashid's intended, a vain and spiteful woman ten years his elder) forever. Rosaand Thaddeus were furious that she had eloped, not only because of the possible scandel it could cause, but because it hurt that she thought she needed to. King Carl and Rashid's father were also livid at this perceived disrespect, and things might have turned into war if Rosa's diplomatic skill had been less great. She sent word to King Karl that she had intended to politely refuse the match in any case, and offered instead a gift in the form of a hefty amount of treasure to seal their friendhsip and goodwill. King Karl was pacified, but Faroud, Prince Rashid's father, was much harder. Rosa sent envoys to personally apologize for the conduct of the young people, both to the king and to Rashid's intended, and they arranged terms that were favorable enough to prevent war. Rashid would live in Tayel, however, as his father was angry enough to not want to see him. Both daughter and new son-in-law got the hrashest tongue-lashing they had ever received about their conduct, and then the matter was dropped. The happy pair have had two beautiful daughters, Princess Julianna and Princess Natalia. Julianna is a delightfully charming toddler and Natalia is a darling baby. Their second names are after Rashid's younger sisters, who have come for an exrended stay in Tayel. These granddaughters softened the heart of King Faroud, and Viva and Rashid are planning a visit once Natalia is a little older.
Queen Rosa also recently announced that at the end of the year she will be stepping down, putting the crown on Mira's head. Her daughter is more than ready, she says, and she and Thaddeus are more than ready to retire and enjoy their large and still-growing family.
