Can they be currently inactive celebrities? (And by that I mean, like formerly an active competitor in a sport who is now not actually competing, but still involved? Like coaching or something?)

As long as you make them famous and they aren't anybody who really exists, you're good :)

UN: Cassandra Grace Logan
LN: Petrov (boys)/Petrova (girls)
DH: Ivan Sergeyevich Petrov, "Vanya" (30)
DW: Ekaterina Anastasia (Cavanaugh) Petrova, "Katya" (25)
Type of Celebrity: Athletics
Ivan Petrov was exposed to the world of celebrity at a young age as the son of one of the top former Russian Olympic gold medalists in mens' gymnastics, Sergey Petrov, and ballerina Mariya Mikhailova. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts after his parents immigrated. Sergey opened his own gymnastics facility, which was soon filled with all different levels of students due to his reputations as a gymnast and coach. Mariya even periodically offered some ballet classes to help the gymnasts with their artistry and lines. Young Ivan was frequently with his father and mother, running around the building. One day when he was 2, they noticed him trying to mimic a few of the older boys practicing handstands and subsequently placed him in lessons. Over the years, Sergey quickly realized his son had great potential to reach the Olympics like he himself had.
Enter Ekaterina Cavanaugh. Adopted from Russia at age 4 by a Boston-area couple, she was enrolled in beginning classes at the Petrov facility when her new parents realized she loved to tumble around the house. Like Ivan (called Vanya), Ekaterina (called Katya) blazed through the levels in the gym. As the top level female gymnast, she was often training in close conjunction with Vanya, the top level male gymnast. They became good friends. Katya qualified for her first Junior Nationals at age 11, and was named to the Junior National Team at the end of competition.
When Katya was 15 (and turning 16 in December) and Vanya was 20, the Summer Olympics were held in Lisbon, Portugal. They each qualified as the top qualifier in their respective disciplines and each went on to medal in every event in their discipline. Vanya claimed 5 golds (including the all-around), 2 silvers, and a bronze.
