Not long after the twins' birth, Cecilia and Breccan began seeing each other once again -- and not always in secret. On a few occasions, Cecilia brought the young Princess Genevieve into town with her, for the young girl loved the bright colors of the market that was set up in the main square. She especially enjoyed visiting the blacksmith's shop, because the man who apprenticed there was always nice to her and usually gave her sweets. On his part, Breccan savored every moment he could spend with Cecilia and loved her daughter as his own -- and wished she were.
If Joseph Wilhelm knew about Breccan, he didn't show it. After the court physicians assured him that Augustine and Emmanuelle were healthy babies and would undoubtedly survive, he lost most interest in his wife and started to enjoy the company of other women. After all, he was just out of his teenage years. There would be time enough to have more children, but for now he wanted to make the most of his youth.
When the twins were only four months old, the queen found that she could keep down nothing she ate -- particularly in the mornings. She had felt this way before, but she needed to know for sure. She enlisted the help of a trusted court physician, who confirmed her worst fear: she was with child, about a month gone, by the looks of it. Cecilia was horrified, for she knew beyond doubt that the baby was not her husband's -- it was Breccan's. It would be impossible to keep the pregnancy a secret, but if Joseph Wilhelm discovered that another man had fathered the child, he would not hesitate to kill it and her.
That night, Cecilia mustered as much charm as she could and seduced the king into his bed. It was the only way he would ever believe the child was his. The next morning, she took Genevieve into town. While the little girl amused herself with the new toy the blacksmith's apprentice had given her, Cecilia told Breccan about the baby. The young man was torn. Of course he was thrilled that his beloved was going to bear his child, but he knew that he would never be that child's father. Cecilia confirmed as much: she would bring the child to see Breccan as often as possible, but the king must remain convinced that the child was his.
Eight months later, just a week after the twins' first birthday, Cecilia delivered a healthy baby boy. At first the king was mightily puzzled about how a child could be born prematurely and yet be so strong, but his concerns quickly gave way to joy at having finally fathered a son. He named the prince entirely after himself and his father, so strong was his pride in cementing his legacy. Publicly, the whole kingdom agreed that never had a more handsome boy been born; privately, however, there were snickers that the king had been cuckolded -- there was simply no way the child could be his.
Cecilia's health fared much worse than her newborn son's. The birth had taken a lot out of her, especially since it hadn't been too long ago that she delivered the twins. Moreover, the knowledge that Magnus would never know his true father weighed heavily upon her, and she sank into a pit of melancholy. Joseph Wilhelm was anxious that his wife recover, but his concern did not rest in any sort of husbandly affection or love. Rather, Cecilia had proven quite capable of bearing healthy children, and if she could have no more, then she was a threat to the Tyrian line.
