During the conventional month-long period of mourning, Joseph Wilhelm's advisors were able to arrange for the king to marry Lady Yvaine, the youngest daughter of Duke Aldric in the Dunlin province. This was a smart match, for the Dunns were renowned for their mastery of the seas. With access to the Dunlish fleet, Joseph Wilhelm could blockade his enemies' ports and starve them into submission. Moreover, custom in Dunlin also dictated that the youngest child inherit whatever lands and titles belonged to their father or mother. Since Yvaine was first in line to succeed her father, Joseph Wilhelm stood to gain a great deal from marrying her.
In return for her hand, the king agreed to betroth one of his illegitimate sons to another daughter of Duke Aldric. This was nothing to scoff at, for a bastard son of the king was a son of the king nonetheless. Indeed, the boy's mother was one of the late queen's ladies in waiting, the daughter of a noble house which had served the Tyrian line proudly and loyally for generations. Of course, the boy, named Gareth, was only nine years old, and so the marriage to Aldric's daughter would have to wait a few years.
In the meantime, Joseph Wilhelm brought Yvaine to Kyrn and married her just two months after his wife's death. He did not have time for a lengthy courtship-- there was a war to be fought, after all. What's more, Yvaine was young and beautiful, and the king wanted her immediately. The new queen became pregnant almost immediately after the wedding, leading some to wonder if she had been with child before marrying the king. In time naysayers were proven wrong, for a healthy son was born nine months later. The child was christened Alastair, after Kyrn's patron saint of victory.
Joseph Wilhelm's older children were none too pleased with how these events had unfurled. The eldest, Princess Genevieve, had been especially close to Cecilia, and she felt that her mother's memory had been dishonored by the king's hasty marriage. The fact that her stepmother was just six years older than her only fueled her anger. But there was nothing she could do about it, for she was the king's daughter, expected to be obedient.
Besides, she and her sisters Augustine and Emmanuelle were now old enough that their father thought it time for them to get an education. He sent them to the royal estate in the countryside, outfitted with dozens of servants and governesses, so that they might learn to become proper ladies of the court. He sent his six-year-old son, Prince Magnus, to Kyrn's elite military academy, where the boy would be trained in the art of combat. Such had been the custom for every Tyrian son since the time of the legendary King Thane.
But of course, Magnus was not a true Tyrian son-- though the king was certainly not aware of this. The boy and his younger siblings were all fathered by Breccan Pike, the town blacksmith whom Cecilia had loved since childhood. When Breccan got word that Magnus was bound for the academy, he did not hesitate to volunteer his services at the school's armory. The king was preoccupied with the war and Cecilia was dead-- Breccan wanted to make sure someone was looking after his son, and he would be damned if that someone was anybody but himself.
