Anyone ever heard of the name Egan (pronounced EE-gen)? I just recently heard it a few weeks ago and it has really grown on me. Suprisingly, it's not on BtN's database, but I believe it's Irish for "Little Fire" or something. It's a girl's name but can also be used for a boy.

Your thoughts on it?

I have heard of it, but I prefer it spelled Eagan.

Little fire is also the meaning for Aidan. Anyway, Egan/ Eagan has always seemed male to me.

It's a boy's name

It's an Anglicization of a double diminuative of Aodh (Aodhagán). You could check out Keegan.

I've recently decided I like it. It's nice and farmery. I like that.

It's an Irish surname, apparently originally anglicised from Mac Aodhagain, which comes from the male personal name Aodh, which you can see the meaning of if you click on it. So yup, I guess it more or less means 'son of fire'.

My thoughts on it are that it's fine as a surname.

I do recognise it, although it might be because it's so similar to a lot of names like Evan, Edgar etc. I don't especially like it - the "eg" part makes me think of eggs. It definitely doesn't sound like a girls' name.

It's a surname, so if you look it up on surnames lists you should find it. Of course, that doesn't make it a girl's name ... perhaps you're confusing it with Megan, which of course isn't Irish but is at least fem.

Love it, but generally I have it understood as a boys named related to Aidan.

I know a little boy named Egan and he's super cute. I would hate to see it on a girl.

Maybe it's related to Egon?
I've never seen it before, so maybe they shortened it from Keegan. But I'd spell it Eegan in that case, since I would not pronounce Egan with an 'ee'.

Hm. I think I prefer it for a boy-- it reminds me a little of Keegan and Edgar and seems a bit ungainly for a girl (although the right person could pull it off).

Reminds me of Keegan. I believe Aidan's meaning is "little fire." I just found that Keegan is derived from Aodh ---> Aodhan ---> Aidan. So if Egan is derived from Keegan, than it does indeed mean little fire from it's relationship to Aidan.
