After teh birth of Sebastian, Judith flat refused to have any more children. She who had never wanted to bear a single child had given birth to five of them, and her vanity could take no more ravages to her figure. Besides, she is past the age of child-bearing. She was actually extremely happy when her monthy courses stopped, even though it meant the end of her youth. Much to Bran's relief, his monthly visits to her bedchamber ceased after Sebastian was born. He sees his wife regularly enough to keep up appearances, but they have little to do with one another. Judith amuses herself with gambling and spending the allowance Bran granted her as well as (now she is past her child-bearing ability) indulging in dalliances with the young and eager-for-advancement. It is whispered that the easiest path to advance in the palace ranks goes through the queen's bed. Bran cannot bring himself to care; after all, for the years since Sebastian's birth he has engaged in a relationship with a woman who had been one of Susanna's ladies. Daisy, who was a friend of Susanna's, left court after her death to marry, then returned just after Joseph's birth as a widow. She has only one child, a son named Michael who is of an age with the triplets. Their relationship is politely ignored by the court and the people--a king may have his mistresses, after all. All of Bran's children quite like her, considering her more their stepmother than Judith.
The relationship between Judith and her stepchildren has become outright animosity since Joseph, during his weekly interview with his mother, referred to the Dowager Queen Evelina as "Grandmother Evie" and the late queen as "Mama Susanna." Though she has left the raising of her children entirely to her husband and stepchildren, she was outraged that they would disregard her so much. Worst was when Quinton and Rosabelle and Walter claimed they hadn't done it on purpose. "It isn't as if you love Lily and Thaddeus and Sophia and Joseph and Sebastian," Rosabelle said. "They spend all their time with us, and of course we call our mother "Mother" in front of them. What difference does it make to you?" After this Judith declared that she "washed her hands" of all of them, which gave a bitter amusement to every child down to Sophia, as there was absolutely no difference. Bran refused to get in the middle of it, besides defending Joseph against his mother's wrath. The only difference is that Judith has not had a regular interview with her children since.
Judith's relative removal from their lives has been overshadowed by the happiness of marriages and new arrivals. After four years, Quinton and Beth finally had a child, a darling little son they called Brandon at once. Elias is to honor Quinton's mother (as close as they could get to Elizabeth), and his other names honor other family members and Quinton himself. Always very popular with the people, Quinton and Beth have become more so recently because of their project of building hospitals. They have personally visited the building sites of all seven current construction projects, both even helping as much as their inexperience would allow. The people have come to love Beth for her obvious love for Quinton and her matronly, virtuous demeanor.
Rosabelle and Walter have both also married recently, with varying levels of publis support. Rosabelle's marriage to a prince of Bryony with whom she had fallen deeply in love, but who brought no particularly great alliance or benefit to Irnys, was seen as a rather selfish act. She could have at least chosen a son of Irnys, a nobleman, if she wanted to marry for love. In order to allow his twin to marry the love of her life, Walter married for diplomacy, taking Lady Emmeline of Gold Haven as his wife. Gold Haven is a center for shipping and imports, the most accessible of all Irnys's ports, and Emmeline's father is the main importer of foreign spices, a profitable and vital trade to the kingdom. So when he began hinting that his daughter was of marrying age, Walter knew what he should do. He quite likes Emmeline, who is intelligent and fun-loving and pretty. He does not love her, however, which worried Bran at first. He wanted the alliance with Emmeline's father, but not at the expense of his son having a loving marriage. But Walter insisted that he wanted to marry Emmeline (and in truth he was in love with no one else), so Bran allowed it. Emmeline's share of her father's spice trade brings in atidy income for the royal family, while their relationship means that the king can help keep the spice trade flowing. The people approved of Walter's marriage, and when they saw how happy Rosabelle and how good and honorable Alexander was, they couldn't help agreeing they had been too hard on their beloved princess. There was a great deal of celebration around the birth of her first child, a daughter, especially once they found out the couple had promptly named her Susanna. The memory of their beloved former queen is still strong, especially since Judith is viewed as such a pathetic replacement.
Bran is not able to revel in his grandchildren the way he wants. His instincts as king and military man are telling him that things are not all well as they seem, that there is trouble brewing somewhere he can't put his finger on. Whatever it is, he has confided to his children that he would rather know than keep worrying. It is this worry that had him convince Katarina to not take the throne until she is twenty-five. Katarina agreed readily, as she does not particularly want the throne and has been seriously considering passing her right on to one of her siblings. She is the pet of the kingdom, the very image of her mother and a brilliant and benevolent young woman besides, but her health has always been weak. Julianna is the only one of the triplets to have mostly overcome her difficult birth and early ill-health. She and Gideon fiercely support Katarina, as do all of her siblings, but she is finding that ruling is not what she wants as she gets older.
